Its an ancient old thing, and always needs a bit of coaxing to get the first few feet of slightly rusty wire through to the gun, but today the motor completely went dead after the first 2 or 3 inches of wire, not even trying...

Checked current is going to it, and it is, so im guessing the motor is just shagged?

Anyone know if parts are easy to come by/generic for these things? Please bear in mind I have no idea exactly how old it is, but i knows its alot older as me...

Cheers

Joe

Daft question but is the motor definitely gone or has it stopped gripping the wire?

not sure, i was hoping it was a loose connection as it doesnt even try? Gave both wires a good wriggle, and its theres def current there...

When these do die, do they just go dead, or can you hear them trying?

Guess thats my annual bonus gone on a new welder then :(

How about pulling the motor out and see if it's got any model number / manufacturer markings? If you find out what the spec is it shouldn't be too difficult to find a replacement.

have a look in yellow pages for a local welding supplier. They should be able to repair/ replace broken part at a fraction of the cost of a new unit. The last time I got mine repaired, it cost me all of £35 plus vat for the gas valve and a good clean-up

the good news is telwin are still making welders, so parts should be available. they're made in Italy but theres quite a few companies in uk who sell their stuff. Thankyou google!

it could possibly motor brushes.

I've got a few Telwins at work. Do you have anymore info than the 160 MIG? I'll check tomorrow.

Sorted

Thanks guys, that site will no doubt come in handy in the future as I need a new gun, but got it fixed now

One of my dads mates said to check the feed rollers, as they need to be making good contact with the wire to transmit the current, and the motor works off a relay.

Turns out the wire feed roller was crudded up with kak, my own fault as i dowse the reel with anti corrosive/splatter spray after every use to keep the reel from oxidising, and its built up over the last year or so

Scraped it all off, wire brushed it a bit and it works fine now, thats saved a few pennies!

might be a good idea to blow through the liner to the torch with a comressed airline - you will be surprised how much muck comes out
