I am going to kill the metro at the weekend by pulling the engine from it. It has covered 58'000 miles. I am looking to use this engine as base for the turbo.

Is there likely to be any appreciable bore wear, and is the crank likely to be solid still, i.e. just need a polish

I know until i pull the engine apart I will not know the exact condition internally, but what is everyone elses experiances with similar milage donar engines?

It will get std turbo pistons, mg metro cam, and a bit more boost upon reassembly to a lower milage transmission.

Thanks

depends if you find anything nasty. not even put new bearings in my engine, there was no wear on there one i examined. mine has only done 20 odd thousand miles though. id hone and change bearings, might be worth getting new oil pump as well. then put it back together and see what you have

Its very variable but odds are you will need a rebore, If you are buying new pistons anyway, why not?... Its the extra cost of pistons that make rebores expensive.

You will maybe get away with a crank polish.. both my cranks were fine and my mate is just doing a Midget engine and his is fine as well so 3 for 3 at the mo..

I already have the set of std size turbo pistons. Hmm What i will do is pull the head off and take the engine to the machineist to mic the bores up before ripping it apart fully.

I do have another engine with perfect bores but it is in the car at the moment. and I don't really want to have to mess about swapping engines If I can avoid it.

There will be a noticable ridge at the top of the bore.

Buy some liners and fit those. Theres a bloke selling a set of four Genuine rover liners on Ebay for around £45.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Sounds like you are trying to avoid the issue. The engine should be stripped and inspected if you want to be sure its OK to take the stress of a turbo. what about the camshaft? tappets? cam bearings? When you get the engine out like this wouldn't you at least want to replace the gaskets?

No, I am going to completely rebuild the engine. New cam bearings, main bearings, big ends etc. tappets, mg metro camshaft, new piston rings. clean all the oilways out.

The reason I asked, is that I thought I would have got away with a hone on the bores, I would not have expected them to have a significant wear lip at that milage.

The reason for my wanting to use std size parts is, I have them lying round and may as well put them to good use.

I may pull the engine in the mini at the moment because I know the bores on that are spot on in that, and am fairly sure its low milage and just use that as the donar.

I see, you just want to see the bores to decide which engine to strip.. good luck!! 58000ml doesn't sound much in these days of japanese engines but on an A-series.. you may need it!!

Well, what can I say? Fookin good engine! There is a negligable wear lip - i.e virtually nothing, and where the top rings land it only has ever so slight wear flatting off the honing marks.

A very happy me, though the head was a fucker to take off due to a head stud seizing, but the engine has never been messed with before.

It really depends on how well the engine has been looked after and if it's be serviced regularly and what oil has been used in it.

If you want I've got a dial bore gauge that you can borrow.

What machine shop do you use?

I had a engine that had done 53000 miles which had been looked after. I managed to get away with a hone of the bores and just fitted new bearings and rings, I have however just pulled it to bits for a rebore/build as it had started breathing and blue smoking. If you can afford it i would go the hole hog and fully rebore/build it otherwise just take the risk!

Thanks for the offer Rob, but I am going to strip the engine I have with unmarked bores, and keep the metro engine as the reliable spare that gets thrown in during other rebuilds.

I use Steve Harris for machine work, he is only 2 miles down the road.
