Yes, before you all tell me I should go to a VW forum, I thought I'd see what you guys know about these.

I've been looking for a van for a while to convert into a sort of day van for using at the shows and towing the mini around as the Audi is piling on the miles.

I'm going to look at a non-runner which is up for sale close to me. Its a 2001 1.9td model. I've got no more information than that at the moment. The guy has no idea why it is a non-runner (well he isn't telling me anyway). Are there any known issues with these?

cheers

Rob

apart from them being quite sluggish there isnt really any problems, they are a good van and the best b it about them is that it was 1 body for all models! so seats, windows and engines are all easily swapped.

it might be worth you looking at the price or a 2.5TD engine to drop in it, as with all of the camper type gear in the back of it and then also towing a mini the 1.9 is going to be very lazy!

anything you want to know drop me a pm and i will see what i can find out as we do alot of stuff with T4's at my work(general repairs, conversions etc etc)

Cheers, James.

that was my thoughts too. I've done a bit or research and he runs a commercial garage so no doubt he knows exactly what needs doing.

Shane, cheers, I know they are good workhorses - my concern is how it is going to handle pulling a loaded trailer.

Going to go and see it tomorrow so will see what I can find out then

@Rob

Here in germany there are opinions, that the VW T4 is built for lasting very long.
And that the quality of the "old" T4 is not good for the dealers selling the newer VW T5 - as people like to drive their VW T4 for years.
As the engines (VW T4) are belt-driven, the exchange intervall of the belt should be accepted. (Some money out of your pocket, if you must pay for the labour)
I think to remember, that in the beginning the change of the belt was recommended every 60.000 km.
And, yes, sometimes, belt failures appeared earlier.
Do you know, when the last belt change was? Hoch much km/miles the car did since then? Is that documented?

But, as the seller is a "professional one" - he surely knows, what's good or wrong with "this VW T4".
In germany you must pay attention if you buy a car from a car dealer - everything you don't see, is "perfect in this car" if you ask.
