What do people use to seal their split rims? is it just silicon sealant or something more exotic?

I know this was posted a couple of years back, but I can seem to find the original thread.

The MB split rims we used to have on our Grand Prix were sealed with Silicone Sealant.

The 'Auto' silicone sealant from places like Halfords is a rip off.

MB use ordinary silicone bathroom sealant bought from DIY stores; Homebase, Focus, B&Q etc. Its the same as the automotive silicone sealant just a third the price. Also good on gasket jointing faces.

The thing to watch is that you get all the old stuff off the hub and rims first and use new fasteners and nyloc nuts (torqued to the correct load).

Some say you must use high tensile bolts, others not.

At the point of changing an outer rim on one of our wheels, we took the opportunity to change the rusty old black allen socket cap bolts to M6 A2 stainless steel bought from an engineering retailer along with stainless nylocs.

You can also change the fasteners on wheels that are already sealed and inflated by letting most of the air out of the tyre first then changing one bolt at a time. This way, there's no chance you'll break the seal between the rims.

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.
