Does any one know how much current the starter draws?

I'm going to replace the power cable that runs from the battery to the starter on the the Bloody Open Classic, and after looking at the price of the ready made Mini cables, I've decided to get some wire from Vehicle Wiring Products (need to order some other bits of the anyway) but since they sell four different sizes I thought it best to try and work out which one I need.

PS. I've got no idea what section this should go in so I've stuck it in general chat, mods feel free to move it as you feel fit.

Go for the 300 Amp stuff. On a cold day you're likely to excede this.

I measured mine once and typically got over 100A peak.

The easiest thing to do is get something the same cross sectional area as the standard.

I'd go for the biggest that will fit in the channel, looking at the sizes thats probably the 300A stuff as Wil says.

35mm welding cable is ideal, and plenty for a Mini.
Also excellent for making jump leads from.

Although TBH, 16mm would probably do ok on a Mini.

I use 16mm2 on my car, and all the mini7's and miglia I wire up, never had a problem on any, but they all use the smaller starter motors

i used 16mm on my old car after the std one rubbed through the grommit int eh boot and caught fire. Never had any problems with it, disconnected the ignition and cranked it over for 2mins constant and the wire didn't even get warm.

A cable is rated for a constant current. A 100A cable will be fine for 300A for short bursts. However, unless you are really bothered about saving weight I would go for the 300A stuff.

A pre-engaged BMW takes approx 180amps.

Not measured a A-series though.
