You see a lot of parallel pipe thread on automotive, appliance, and other machinery, but on common house/building/industrial plumbing you find mostly NPT in the States.

I don't think I have ever seen 1/3 NPT. Maybe you meant 1/4 NPT? 1/4 NPT is 0.53" diameter at the middle of taper, 18 tpi. 1/4 BSP is 0.51" diameter, 19 tpi.

G series British Standard Parallel Pipe goes by other names, BSP is the same thing.

BSP is way more common than NPT as can be seen by the fact its easier to get a set of BSP taps and die's, also almost every building in the country will have a BSP thread in it but not likly to have an NPT thread.

but in cars i would have thought NPT was more common nowdays

All the stuff i work with is NPT, but i guess thats due to our fittings supplier being american.

I was going along the lines of cars, engines etc.

I would say BSP is more common for getting hold of fittings over here, but the US tend to use a bit of both NPT and BSP.

There is BSPT and NPTT threads which are the tapered versions aswell wich are quite often used with hydraulic fittings? *oh well*

Other way round Matt, tapered fittings are not used on hydraulics, parallel threads with cone seats are used on hydraulics. Taper threads are used on lower pressure stuff.

Hmm the fittings we use at work are tapered and are used up to 200bar?

Are you on about the JIC fittings with cone shaped ends?

I know we used BSP for gas & oil fittings. So fueling might be the same.

I've always been told never to use taper fittings on hydraulics, and that hydraulic fittings should always be sealed on a cone and seat and never the thread?
