Hi,

I know most people use a grey one, but who uses an orange one and on what power/torque? Its just I have an orange one lying here and dont really want to change unless I have to! Its not a monster engine - just a 1275, phase 2, benross head and maybe 12-14 psi!

It's not a big deal to change one in situ (don't even need the flywheel off). So give it a go, if it slips change to a grey.

I think it'll be on the limit really, but if it works then it'll save the thrusts.

What is important is to get the flywheel lugs machined to make the most of it's clamping force.

It'll slip.
My orange (back in the day) was good for only 8psi.

Ok cheers for that! Would rather get it right now, as its easier to change now rather than in the car!

ah, but that's only because my 8psi makes so much more power than any other mini ever invented ever.

turbodave - ok, well if thats true my engine wont be anywhere near that.

Does anyone have a ballpark figure for the orange diaphragm limit?

Orange will crap out at circa 100lb ft with the organic plate. No playing with lug heights will help that. Swap it out and forget the clutch as being a weak point.

I'm using an orange diaghram with an AP paddle plate. 16 PSi boost on 1293 MED bottom end, big valve head etc... and it holds up fine. The whole clutch assembly was supplied by MED though so lugs where probably machined before hand.

Oh, and at 10 PSi with no intercooler it was 129bhp and 129ft/lbs and its now running 16 PSi with an intercooler, so should be a fair bit more, and no clutch slip yet.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

coupe, is you boost gauge right ?
and what turbo are you running ?
MED do a good job on the head but.... not quite *wink*

depends on the rollers as well, some read way..... low
Turbo Daves advise is well born out by me
for get the orange

a vertro clutch i killed this within 5 miles, i upgraded to the super heavy duty one and killed that as well! within 10 miles

i have killed a grey at the moment and need to upgrad to a double grey with the lugs machined off

an orange plate i have fitted to my grand sone buggy and thats slipping .... excuse the pun *laughing*

Boost gauge reads about 1 PSi high at 17 PSi, hence running 16 PSi - confirmed by an accurate calibrated oil filled type doobrie. Running on a standard rebuilt Metro Turbo T3.

Power run was at flywheel and on Minisport's rollers, which always seem to have been good in the past.

I've no doubt that the clutch will let go at some point. I've been fairly forgiving with the way I drive the car so far. However I'm going to Shakespeare this weekend for the RWYB, so I'll report back as to whether or not I've destroyed the clutch!!!

i ran a blue dot with 6psi which was 97hp and 92ft/lbs with no slip, uped to a orange dot when the boost was raised and that was holding up with 10psi and 139hp and 120ft/lb torque

How the hell an orange diaphram is holding up to that kind of torque is amazing ! Lol.
My single grey wouldn't take over 15/16psi even with the backplate correctly machined. So i've been on a double grey for the past year. Good stuff !

I have an orange diaphragm and initially tried a standard turbo clutch plate. It lasted about 10 miles... I put an AP rally plate in, still with the orange diaphragm and it's held out for a couple of years and about 2500 miles so far. Currently got 144lb ft at 14 psi according to Emerald's RR. It doesn't get too much abuse as it's a sunny day road car, maybe I've just got lucky and have a good one?
