Hi,

i am building my engine and now the next step is to refit the gearbox to the rest of the engine. But i'm having some problems with the seal that goes on the bearing cap on the radiator side*frown*.

1: it seems to be to large. if i place it in the gearbox it's still a couple of mm sticking out on both sides?????

2: it's very flexible and i heard that there is a other seal that has a steel strip in it that should give a better seal. But i never seen it so maybe one of you*smiley*

3: which way should it go in, don't remember it any more and can't find it in any of my books*surprised*
Is the second photo the correct way?

Thanx

I added some pics:

there is nothing wrong with a A-series that a turbo can't fix.

First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

Herefordshire

fatter edge against the cam timeing end plate, the way youve got it

cut it down to size, its easiest to do this by fitting it in the gearbox

the one that came out of the engine has also been cut. But i think it's strange that a seal needs modification to get a good fit.

But hey it's a mini so anything is possible:cool:

There is another steel type, I always use them but I'm sure people have used the floppy ones with no problems.

It will be in for a year. So if it can hold up for that long it will be fine.
I will make it fit and one we go.......

I wouldnt cut it down, use RTV on both sides (maincap/seal and seal/ gearbox), install the seal so the ends are flat against the bottom face of the block. As you install the gearbox, the seal will compress evenly. Never had a gearbox leak from there yet. Infact, i have sucsesfuly built three leak free engines, so those who say it cant be done, need to re asses their assembly technique *tongue* *wink*

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

I have different sets in my garage but all have the floppy seal. But it's in now, with a little silicon.
