I finally got hold of a 2.95 CW&P off ebay the other day (I've been trying to get a 2.9 or 2.7 for a while with no luck) but was rather disappointed when I looked at the pinion as all the teeth had unexplained wear on their tops about half way across.

It covers less than the loaded width so I was puzzling to think what might have caused it when I realised that it's about the width of the 3rd motion shaft bearing retainer plate, so I guessed the bearing must have collapsed and let the pinion rub the plate.
Being brave (or is it foolhardy?) I decided to fit it anyway on the logic that a bit of loss off the top of the teeth is not in the main wear area (flank) or the highly stressed area (root) but when I tried, it wouldn't go onto my mainshaft and here's why.
Bottom is the bearing retainer in my box, an Aplus but an early one, and on top, a retainer from a later Aplus (which I had left over from a broken case).
Presumably they enlarged the ID of the retainer to accomadate the larger 2.9 and 2.7 pinions.
So was my first theory right, or did the previous owner just hammer it into the smaller retaining plate and let it cut its own bigger hole....

Yes, When fitting a 3.1 or higher, you need a different retainer.

Yours appears to have been butchered.

I've got a retaining ring off a factory 2.95 box, if you want it PM me your address and I'll chuck it in the post on the weekend.

I always thought that only remote boxes needed grinding the retainer.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

I'm guessing that all the later A+ boxes had the bigger plate whatever their FD ratio - the one on top in my photo came out of a later A+ MG Metro box that only had the 3.44 FD but it's still big enough to accept the 2.95 pinion whereas the one bottom in my photo, also A+ with a 3.44 FD (but an earlier box), won't.

Rob H - PM on its way...

Vegard - it surprised me but I've now checked two retainers from EARLY A+ boxes (DAM2886 rather than DAM5626) and they are both too small.

Rod.
