I always do my own work on my cars, so I haven't a clue what is considered reasonable.

So what would you guys say is a fair price for a basic service (e.g. oil and filter, plugs, air filter) and front brake discs and pads on a 5 year old medium hatch (e.g. Mondeo/Vectra sized)? All in price including parts and labour?

Cheers.

Well I can tell you that my local garage will do a basic service for 60 quid, but that is real basic. Just oil and filter change, not even an air filter. You are looking at more like £120 for all filters and plugs, then brakes on top of that, which I don't really know.

Well I'd love to know where you lot get your bits.
I've done this work today for a guy I know, parts came to £125, I've charged £45 labour.

Discs were £40+VAT, Pads £25+VAT, Synthetic Oil £20, I didn't think either of those prices were out of the way either.

sounds like fair prices for parts Tom,

yes you can get cheap discs and pads, but theyre shite lol.

I think thats fair for labour too, how long did it take? 2hrs? thats still half what a dealer would charge.

My local "small" garage charges £32 an hour, no doubt dealers will charge more than that.

i only service friends cars i charge them £20 per hour, including going to the local motor factors, and for parts,

normally about £100 in total for plugs, leads, oil, oil filter, air filter and fuel filter, then finally top up the fluids.

If required i will do the power steering and fan belts, but thats not very often lol

They also all think you have to go to quick fit for the brakes, so i never do them either, but thats their choice lol

the local garages here can do a 'service' from £49 but i think that extends to moving the car into the workshop and back out again - I would be surprised if they even opened the bonnet!

I would expect around £110 for the basic service and, depending on the car, another 1hr - 1.5 hrs for the disc and pads

I charge £40 an hour.

Most dealerships are about £100 and London BMW dealers are about £180!!

Also remember most places charge vat.
