Hard drive failed on my laptop, I bought a new one and fitted it and it's now asking for a "system disc" when I turn it on. What's a system disc? Anyone got one I can borrow?
Laptop is a Toshiba.
Please can someone help
Regards
Dave

It's looking for a drive with an operating system on, which would probably be the faulty drive you removed. So you're gonna need to install an operating system to the new drive. If the laptop came with any cd's have a look for a Windows disc or could be labeled 'system restore'.

If it's got a floppy drive, you can make a system disk from any PC. It just contains the basic drivers needed to run the Windows installation CD.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

Shouldn't need to bother with a boot disk if you've got the windows cd. Just thinking though, theres a good chance you might not have one as I've known laptops to be supplied with the installation files on a separate partition on the hard drive in place of a physical cd.

If you need an XP disc I can dig out a copy for ya.

Andy is right, most b*stard laptop sellers are too tight to provide cds like they used to so they make a small partition on the hard drive containing the restore info. Fine if it is just corrupt, but if the drive goes your stuffed. They normally try and make you burn your own backup dvds when u first get the laptop/pc.

Andy is right.
If you have any CDs that came with the machine then look for one that says System Restore.
Otherwise you will need to install an Operating System (assume WinXP) but you are likely to need device drivers to get the thing running properly afterwards.
You may have a device driver CD or they will need downloading from t'Interweb.
If you need any assistance let me know, I could always take a look for you.

What model Toshiba, and how old?
My Toshiba laptop did actually come with a system restore disk from the factory (although webba is right that a lot of suppliers now hide a small partition on the installed HD and tell you to make your own restore CD/DVD - too late when the HD has failed...). Mine is three years old though, so even Toshiba may have stopped providing restore disks on their newer models.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???
