Is there any problems with fitting mk2 rear light in to a mk3/4 with the 3 bit rear lenses? whats the MOT man have to say if the car losses the reverse lights?

what reg is it ? i think if its after 72 it has to have fog lights, cant remember the exact year, but say if ures is a 92 J reg and you put mk2 lamps in it will fail, unless you have another fog light elsewhere ? also reverse lights as the car was fitted with them at time of manufacture you have to have them.

The fog light isn't in the Mk4 cluster though. However I believe you will need a reverse light.
The classic looking chrome fog and reversing lights mounted below the bumper work well though.

Other problems:
- The Mk2 lights are about 15mm smaller all the way round than the later ones so fitting them may expose crappy paint.
- They will not plug into the loom as they use bullet connectors not a plug. You will either need to splice the plug off the old unit onto the new ones or cut the socket off the loom.

Mines a 87. I was planning on leaving the fog light under the bumper on but just changing the lights over. They fit in the same hole don't they so i can give it a go and change them back if it fails.
or wait have my MOT done then change them. be alright for a year.

My car has mk2 light and its 87, it has the fog light in the standard place, it went for the mot without the reverse light on and nothing was said about having no reverse light, i do now however have my rear reverse light fitted on my boot lid, the period ones.

Mine is '95 and has mk2 rear lights and the fog light under the bumper.

Currently no reverse light and went through the MOT ok, as far as I know reverse light isn't tested unless it's there.

I have one to fit but haven't got round to it yet.

Yep mine is an 88 and has Mk2 lights, and passes fine. If you have reversing lights they have to work but if you don't have them it doesn't matter. *wink*

Reverse lights are not testable, my track 205 in its various guises has passed its test for the past 4 years without any.

Here is a most useful document for all MOT questions.
http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual/contents.htm
In section 1 there is no mention of reversing lights.

as i get told everytime i check the reverse lights on a car in for a mot at work you dont need to check them. you do not need reversing lights on a car. but if you turn your reversing lights on and off with a switch (like mine) you can use clear blulbs for your fog as the cluster is all red at the bottem its all good. just let the mot man know its there first :)
