As a 1972 Mini owner anything else ie newer with black and silver plates should be given a prohibition notice and crushed (excuse pun!)

This is a common mis-understanding - historic vehicle status is upto 31st December 1972 (plus a little lea way). Black and silver plates are 'legal' up to 1 August 1973 - the point at which the age identifier was changed from L to M.

The two are not connected and are borne from entirely different government/dvla thoughts, it is just conincidence that the rolling 25 year historic vehicle status was stopped at a point where its cut off date was the same sort of time that the plate colours had been changed many moons ago.

Even some of plate makers get this wrong.

i thought you could have black and silver plates on any age of car, as long as the car has a private plate from a car of the right age.

I've never been pulled with black and silver plates on my G plate 89'er.

I'm buying some normal ones, but they will be off straight after its MOT'd.

In the 13's at last!.. Just
