just got in flicked men and motors on before i got in the shower to find drifting, now with most motorsports they are timed or first man across the line wins. but not drifting it seems the more decorated your car is the better and its judged just like gymnastics or ice dancing what a load of tosh!!!

but hey ho i did enjoy watching it for 10 mins and it looks like fun but is it motorsport?

Speeding is like masturbating, everyone does it, but not all of us film it and put it on the internet

Of course it is.
Just you try holding it sideways through a tight bend with another car about four inches off you rear bumper.
And you can try it as well. All you need is an old Sierra and an empty parking lot!!:)

Warning:Stig in Training

I thinks it is, ther is quite a following of it, more so after films like to fast..... I quite enjoy watching it, and also owning a rear wheel drive car, and being quite partial to playing about getting the tail out appreciate the skill some of the drivers show!

i have given it a try but more of the clutch drop drift instead of the handbreak (dont know the terms) but you get points for how close you get the the man infront(without touching), amount of tyre smoke, angle of the front wheels, angle of the car, entery speed int the corner and how fast you take it. i love watching it lol

For sure its a motorsport, it takes alot of skill, its fun to watch, fun to try and most people can give it a go!!

Think my next car after my mini is going to be a mk2 escort (something like a n/a cosworth) or an AE86 Levin Coupe which i have a massive soft spot for.

So tempted to try and get a BMW E30 for a daily and fun car while i have the mini though, not a massive engine size maybe just the 2 litre:

I love the feint at 1.40 going in to the left hander.

I find it more of a show than motorsport. The japs turning a perfectly good 4 wheel drive Mitzy into a rear wheel drive. Damn waste if you ask me. How would they do in a Rally????? Proper car control at 100+ mph? A true undisputed motorsport. Said my bit! lmao

yeah it is a real skill.

A friend of mine has driven a full on drift car.

He does a lot of circuit racing at various levels, and says that they go sideways much more easily than your standard rwd car due to the 2 way diffs they run.
Not my cup of tea, but the fact that they're so close together has to make it impressive. . . . unless they hit each other of course!

This is FORD country, on a quiet day you can hear Vauxhalls rusting.

leeds/wakefield.

how the fuck can it be motorsport, ever since c arl benze but an engine in one of his horsedrawn carraiges men have pitted there cars against one and other , but there has always been a well defined object to the game,
be it racing, its first to cross the line , time trialing, against the clock or even sumo, push your man out of the ring thew rules are clear, but with drifting its an open book, impartial judges decide who has more flair, and a pretier car,
what a brilliantly conceived rule that one is,

its a big load of show bollocks[ skillfull yes] motorsport, not a change!!!

Thats the second time you've agree'd with my comments fastcarl!!!!!!!! roflmao.
Also I like to add....most people 35+ year olds were brought up & began driving with rear wheel drive cars. Escorts, Manta/Ascona, SD1, Capri to name a few. Not many about nowadays & cars seemed to have lost the fun factor & basic car control needed with all that electronic crap.

Edit...I by no means a brilliant driver! *oh well*

i think that its a great thing to watch and there is a hell of alot of skill involved. but from looking at it ive got to agree with milamber and fastcarl i couldnt really call it a true sport.

i think that once you get into it and properly find out the rules and regulations etc etc its will become clearer on how it is judged and is probably very fair. but it does look like there is a fair bit of influences that goes into the judging where as in most motorsports its more of a clear cut winner or loser!

impressive none the less.

I must agree with Carl.

Of course there is skill involved, but it's just a big show.

It's like the trampoline basketball thingy to the fans of basketball. It's entertaining, but can't be taken seriously like a 'proper' sport.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

i wasnt doubting the skill of the drivers for a second just the use of the term motorsport and drifting together haha

maybe we should have some kind of flair points at avon for the gayest looking car?

Stuff like Darts and bowls is called a sport isnt it, if they can be called sports, then i reckon drifting can be a form of motorsport! They have motors, and theres a winner and a loser! I know what you mean about them defining who wins who loses but i still reckon it could be classed as a motorsport!

Prefer hillclimbs and circuit racing more than anything though, and prefer watching drifting to drag racing! Ppl slag of stock cars saying they only go in one direction but i agree with rob, at least the go round bends!*tongue*

Drag racing is a timed event...so theres a clear winner.

Yeah definately! Not saying its not a motorsport or anything:)

As someone said before, in some drifting they try to ovetake each other and its best of 3 sort of thing, they start off equally so whoever gets over the line first wins, thats like sprints with two cars, except they go more sideways lol.

As a mate of mine just said, theres drifting leagues, so its definately a competitive motorsport *wink*

Lol I never thought this would turn into such a debate. Fair few good points being made, but its just personal prefference, at the end of the day im not either a sport or motorsport fan, but I love driving, Ive had rear drive cars from the age of 19 and love the nature of them, which is maybe why I enjoy watching it, each to their own tho, and for whatever reason they feel correct.
