Hello lads.
What kind of movement should the steering wheel have from left to right before the wheels start to turn.
as mine can move about 1/2" maybe, till the wheels start to move.
Is that normal ? could someone try on there car please, just to make sure this is normal :) maybe im worrying over nothing

Cheers lads.

it should be pretty much minimal. do you have solid mounts for the front frame? check track rod ends as well and make sure the rack bolts in the floor are tight

might also be worth checking the splines/ joint between the rack and column - mine wore out a few years ago as someone hadn't tightened the pinch bolt up properly in the past

I had a 2nd hand colum fitted last year, which i got for free.
Was as good as new.
My old one wore out on the splines also. i went to drive away, and the steering wheel just turn round.. fck was i lucky.
I just reshimmed all the balljoints, which are new. and the track rod ends are new, which seem fine. i just jacked her up again, moveed the wheel from side to side, which seems to have abit of play again :( i watched to see what it was while my mate moved the wheel from side to side, and the rack is what seems to have the play on it. so could it be the the grooves on the steering rack be worn ?

more likely the rack knuckles than the teeth themselves. but either way its a new rack unfortunately.
