Right, i finally finished my P.T uni course last week and thought i would get stuck in with getting my engine and gearbox back together this morning but have come across a few problems almost immediatly!

First off i was fitting a clutch oil seal in the transfer gear housing but just want to know how far should it go in? Please see the 1st pic is this right?

Secondly i wanted to fit the engine back on the transmission but after examining the gaskets i have i dont think there right. I bought them from minispares as the mpi only ones (as mines an mpi engine) but the hole in the gasket isnt big enough to go over the o-ring on the oil pick up. Surely this cant be right? do i just modify it or are they completely wrong? Please see picture 2

Cant get these photos to upload but basically the hole in the paper gasket is smaller than the o-ring, surely this cant be right??

Also, im having trouble with my speedo drive! I want to use a 7 tooth spindle and a 17 tooth pinion but they wont interlock/mesh is there a reason for this?
Thanks in advance and if anyone can help with the pics then that would be great.
Cheers
Andy

Press the crank oil seal in untill it sits flush with the casing.

All the gaskets ive ever used have the same thing, with the hole in the gasket beig smaller than the size of the O ring. Ive always just left it and plenty of RTV sealnt and never had a problem. *oh well*

Excellent cheers for the help matty. So did you just let the gasket cover the o-ring?

What final drive, wheels and speedo are you using.

I could hazard a guess at the last two but the first one i wouldnt know

Is the 7/17 a known combination or is it something you are asking because you are unsure.

Did your speedo read right originaly?

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Hi Sprocket,

My speedo underead by around 30% since getting it back from vmax. Wheels are standard sportspack, speedo was working fine before the gearbox was rebuilt at vmax and is the nippon 1300tpm type as in all the later mpis. Final drive is a 3.1. I got the 7/17 from a speedo calculator on some website called Toms Mini Site.
Cheers

I found the gear calculator program on Minifinity tech section to be the nuts!

Use that to calculate the speedo drive ratio. you can then work out what spindles and pinions you need.

TBH, if you want acuracy, you need to measure the rolling radius of your wheel/ tyre and then do the math the long way. That is the best way to get the correct figure and then choose the closest combination of gears, erring on the safe side and aim for the ratio and indicating a slightly higher speed rather than a lower speed.

The figure you have may well be right and i dont see there being a problem with a 7/17. I run a 6/18 and a 5/15 (two different boxes) for the 3.76 FD on thirteens and the 1300tpm speedo, so the gears are pretty interchangeble.

15/7 = 2.14
16/7 = 2.29
17/7 = 2.43
15/6 = 2.5
18/7 = 2.57
16/6 = 2.67
17/6 = 2.83
15/5 = 3
18/6 = 3
16/5 = 3.2
17/5 = 3.4
18/5 = 3.6
