I'm currently nearing completion of changing the cambelt on my A4 TDI. In a nice scary fashion the camshafts do not have a woodruf key and the cam pulleys sit on a taper! One of the cam pulleys then drives the injector pump via a bolt on sprocket with slots in it. The combination of all that is that the injector pump timing could end up not being right.

To check it you need a diagnostic doodar to plug into the car, then running the engine it will tell you the injection timing. I've got a USB cable but to do this bit you need the proper software.

I know a few of you are into your VW's etc so what I am looking for is someone in the area with the VAG-COM software who I could pay to come and read this timing whilst I adjust it. I'd rather pay an individual than have to fork out £££ to a mobile diagnostics guy.

So if anyone knows anyone, or posts on a VW forum any help appreciated!

I have an OBD thingy that I bought from ebay, and that came with some VAG-COM software. I have no idea if the software works, but you are welcome to borrow it for evaluation purposes *wink*. You will just need the OBD scanner tool and a laptop.

My diesel nutnut friend said you normally use locking pins when doing VW cambelts. Just like the old 1.8 Escort Diesels & 2.5di lumps. Not much help now your done it. :(

Cheers guys, I've got the trial/shareware version of the VAG-COM and a USB lead, this allows me access to some of the functions, but to read "measured values" you need the full version of the software at $200....

Milamber, unfortunately there are no locking pins to use on this, its the V6 diesel not the (much) more common 1.9 4 cyl.

Do the shareware versions normally come with a keygen?

Just had a look and VAG-COM is available on the torrent networks. Small download only a couple of mb.

http://isohunt.com/download/13197526/VAG-COM.torrent

I recommend using μTorrent to snag it.

You snooze you lose! *Nerd*

Just realised I maybe shouldn't have posted the link directly to the forum, let me know if it needs editing.

Actually just browsing through comments on tracker sites and it looks like these releases might not work unless you have a specific brand cable.

some guy said:
This crack is not really a crack afterall. Its just the registration files of a Single HEX-COM interface made by ROSS-TECH that is useless for any other interface. Not to mention that this interface can be tracked down and been banned from future versions.

If you plug any other smart cable (one with dongle) then the VAG-COM sents a query to the interface and overights the d1.bin, d2.bin and d3.bin with the ones been calculated from the new interface and the previous registration is gone, so the VAG-COM reverts to shareware again.

There are third party cables with dongles which the do not include registration files (such as autointern that use a Microchip made PIC18F242). These interfaces work with 504 and above as shareware and if you register VAG-COM, Ross-tech sends a XXXXX.VCA file that has the registration.

When VAG-COM fires up, it looks for XXXXX.VCA (where XXXX is the first portion of the cable serial number). If it finds that file and its valid, it then flashes the dongle with the registration serial that contains and makes it valid, turning VAG-COM into registered version.

This is the procedure, so unless a keygen that produces xxxx.vca files based on the serial of the smart cables attached, cracks are useless

FWIW...unless you have actually removed the cam pulley from the camshaft, I wouldnt be worried about it.

9.85 @ 145mph
202mph standing mile
speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

I've had to remove both cam pulleys of each bank to do the cam seals, you also have to remove the injector pump pulley to get the cover off so you can get to the water pump. All in all a pig of a job!

In the end they didn't look too bad but seeing as I had it that far in bits it seemed a false economy not to change them.
I was quoted £900 just to change the cambelt, injector pump belt and water pump, as it turns out every single one of the 9 idler rollers/tensioners was bollocksed so I've ended up changing the lot; god knows how much a garage would have charged.
However I've now got a nice selection of special tools made to do the job, so if I ever need to do it again......

I got all the work done during my last service by a local specialist. Long life service, 1 wheel bearing and the belts, tensioners and water pump came to just over £900 plus vat. Consider the hassle you've had well worth the effort!

Unfortunately the skinflint in me prevents me from paying someone else to do something I can do myself. I blame my father for this as he is the same.
In total it will cost me just short of £400 for all the parts (all genuine bits).
