Not long ago, someone on here(can't remember who or why) commented that he didn't trust dynos and dyno operators to get his car setup right, and said it was possible to do it yourself using a Lambda Sensor and a few other gizmos.

Is this true or have I been dreaming? And what would the procedure be for such a test?

Thanks

Tom

Joe, do you have a photo of your tool?

I always do myself on the road. Lambda and a knock sensor connected to a modified walkman.
But you need at least a 500m portion of road where you can stay running full throttle during 1-2 hours without bothering anyone. No houses, no cops, no roads around.

Ah yea, you also need good brakes :) . To stay full throttle at 6000RPM.

To an extent you can but it is difficult to replicate load for long periods on the road compared to a RR.

Maybe add a G-Tech Pro meter to give you an idea of how you are doing? Round our way the local drag strip has "tunup" sessions where you can mess around to your hearts content.

As to procedure, not sure but maybe Firstly get the fuelling right then start advancing? How far do you go with the advance Alpha? til it detonates than back off or what?

could have been me?? i tune my car on the road. but never said i didnt trusy dyno operators, just i prefer to do it al lmyself for the lerning experience.

mapped fuel witha wideband and ignition timing i used an excell spreadsheet i wrote to calulate wheel torque from the rate of acceleration from datalogs. mega log viewer now has this function vbuilt in!

this worked great with NA setups and very low boost, but i found once i got higher up in teh boost the datalogging technique started to become scetchy due to other factors. so i map my ignition timign as perfect as i can from 0psi to ~7psi and extrapolate the rest at .3 degrees retard per PSI, listening for knock and checkign the plugs occationally for signs aswell. to date its done me pretty well tbo. last inspection of the pistons and they were tip-top :)

Start with a pessimistic ign advance to tune injection. Then increase advance listening for knock and adjust injection. Then go up to the knock and back off 5 degrees.
Of course this does not work with low compression engines. You need a GTech like device to know when it's optimal advance.
BTW, GTech is not precise enough to map, it's only to have an idea. It's better to use an acceleration software connected to the RPM.

I agree that mapping high boost engines without RR is difficult, the dynamic turbo behavior is different from the static one, the advance is difficult to tune. Injection is OK.

OK Thanks both of ya,
I can see the point on the G-tech, too many other factors like missing a gearchange, spinning the wheels etc. but its not a bad before/after indicator.

I'll have to look into the rpm analysers some more..

surely thats got to be sigged by someone?*surprised* *hehe!*

Medusa + injection = too much torque for the dyno ..https://youtu.be/qg5o0_tJxYM

Thanks lads.
I was wondering this cos there's only 1 dyno in this country and I would probably be laughed at if I said I wanted to dyno a Mini.

I wonder what Redwing did with his TM.
Does anyone know by any chance?

Datalogging of AFR's, boost, etc etc is very handy.

It means you can make one decent run in say 3rd or 4th gear...view how things look, and make adjustments.

I do pretty much all my tuning on the road ( or track )...and that isnt always easy !!!!

Cant you just go to HalFar and test there ??

9.85 @ 145mph
202mph standing mile
speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

I do my own tuning aswell with a wideband and knock sensor, I havent had any problems yet, but im still learning! Its also better if you can get somebody else to drive!

I tried that. I'm not convinced it's better. Sometimes you see something strange but you don't know what exactly the driver did.

I dunno about Hal-Far Stevie.Might have to look into it but thats just a quarter mile track and another quarter or so of run off.
Will that be enough?

Also this sort of thing is virtually unheard of in Malta as the only real testing is done by the drag boys on the one dyno in the island. All the road going guys just bung it together and whip the shit out of it.

Also could you suggest any dataloggers Stevie?
And you guys are all using MegaJolt or similar right?

I've mapped twice on a track. Me as passenger. Very difficult. Too much traffic, you can not go slowly or brake in straight lines. And the driver constantly trying to race LOL.
