now somthings telling me its to high.

i turned it off stright away as i dont want to damge it.

am i right in thinking i should of fitted it with the plunger? as i didnt do this. (just the ball bearing and the spring is in there)

if useign a ball bearing you need to trim the spring a bit IIRC :) as its more compressed than it is (was) with the plunger.

I thik some one at Minispares has putt standard springs in the Cooper S springs box, as jackman had this problem last year. Put an old spring and plunger in from a 998 and oil pressure is 60 psi and 40 at idle.

I used the cooper s ball and spring in the 1400 when i built it in 2006, that gave oil pressure of 90psi at idle on a new engine, raised the revs and you could clearly see when the relief opened as tthe presssure rose slightly and then dropped, but it never swayed much from 90psi. Never checked it since. New engines should always give higher pressure readings at idle at firs a least.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

The idea is that the bearing dosen't stick, unlike the standard bullit.

However, I found that the ball bearing gave very inconsistent oil pressures and I binned it in favour of the standard item.

But yes, trim the spring, or buy the proper one. Best to put the old relief vale back for now me thinks.

I had this problem using a bearing and spring. Ended up with 8mm of preload on the spring.

I just chucked the old shuttle back in instead as ive never had a problem with it before? *oh well*

well iv just put the old one back in as it holds its psi.

i fitted it as the bloke at minispares said fit that instead of a oil cooler!!

my psi was going down to about 20 at idle after motoway driving but it stayed at atleast 40 at part throtal and 50 when i put my foot down.

iv now got the standerd relive valve in and a 10 row oil cooler with a theremostat (80 degrees). i just gave it a blast and once warmed up after abit of dual carrage driving it stays at 30psi at idle and 45 at part throtal and 55 at full throtal.

good oil pressure when warm, idling, crusing and full throttle, but drops right off so the light comes on after a long run on the motorway could indicate the oil strainer in the sump is blocked. Jackman also suffered this at the exact same time as the high pressures with the coopr s spring annd ball. At first it was confusing, untill i stripped the box to find all sorts of crap stuck to the central oil pick up blocking nerarly 50% of the strainer. Now i dont think the type of central pick up was helping as there wasnt much exposed surface area of the strainer mesh to the pick up pipe, considering the amount of mesh that is on the end of the pipe, just a shite design. The oil pump had minor marks on the tips of the rotors, but over all was like new, that was replaced just in case, as were the bearings which had shown signs of metal to metal contact. Sandard plunger and spring fittted and its been fine since.
