Is there any big difference between the diffs themselves? obviously the final drives will be different but the main diff? will that be any different?

Nothing different about the diff itself.

The crown wheel and pinions can differ though as you say.

the only diffrernce is between a series and a+

A+ have tagged planet thrust shims

weres a seies do not and were out the diff casing

just use the a+ one if thats you thing

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

That diff pin block disappeared in the 80ies sometime as well. Bad idea!
