just done a quick calculation, my CR works out as 9.25.

how much boost will it be safe to run with an rs turbo intercooler.

im only looking for a fast road engine, was thinking along the lines of 8psi?

8 psi should be fine. There are no hard and fast rules, run whatever you feel comfortable with, and more importantly can run with detonation.

its my 1st turbo build tom. was thinking of 7 psi to start with, though i think 8-9 should be safe. the only problem is i am running a dizzy, but will have it all set up properly on a good rolling road. what type of power would an engine running this boost and cr normally make?thanks

Should have read "without detonation" above.

Power would only be a guess. Maybe 110-115bhp.

the cam is a sw5, running a rebuilt big valve austin 1300gt head, ported and polished, maybe some a series rockers that i have bushed to 1.4 as opposed to standard a+ ones.
gearbox is sccr, with 2.9 fd
was wondering if it would be worth using a lightened flywheel?

I used 10 psi too with no probs; 9.4 cr intercooled, high grade fuel (98) at 24° max advance, but do not use this as a rule , hot day, bad tank, overheat, and you'll kiss your pistons

Im not even going to say what I was running because of my "school boy error" on my first build! *laughing* Nic knows what I mean! Lol

You should be fine with 10psi especially with a well positioned IC. *wink*

I fitted the actuator 180 degrees the "wrong" way so I never realised the hose was missing on the actuator....need I say more!

I ran it like this for about 9 months before Nic pointed out it was missing Avon! What makes it worse is that i had no IC at the time either running 9.4:1 CR! Lol

Was this the same Avon you were punching holes in a actuator pipe to get more boost??

Interesting !
How much psi do you think you had without IC ?

Ah yeah it was *laughing* but I fitted an IC the Friday morning before Avon and it really wasn't pulling. Turned out to be a hoses popping off the IC under boost. The making holes was a desprate attempt to get it to go quicker!

I know the boost reached 12 PSI, and I did have issues with pinking (on a couple of occasions) on really hot days and had a sticky valve. But must of done 6K in it that year (had it as a daily driver). I think the boost was only limited at around 12 PSI because I bolted the turbo on thinking the preload was right and turned out to be holding the wastegate only just open. The boost took a while to build up (due to wastegate being slightly open) but still pulled well. Pistons were fine on last inspection, no signs of damage due to detonation so fook knows....may of opened a can of worms here. *hehe!*

I wouldn't recommend running 12 PSI with or without a cooler at a 9.4:1 CR don't get me wrong!!! You learn from your mistakes anyway..kind of! *happy*
