Hi.IT WONT START!! i have a fully rebuilt engine with....

+20 thou overbore to 1293
omega 10cc dished pistons
T3 camshaft and hardened followers (MED)
skimmed flywheel
comp clutch
highlift rockers
high capacity oil pump (MED)
Garett t3 turbo
High boost carb needle and spring
hardened and balanced crankshaft
balanced con rods.

I cannot get the damn thing to start. I have a decent spark and have set the regulator to 4 psi. I have oil in the dashpot. The carb was taken off a metro turbo and i have played with the mixture with no success. I have tried 2 sets of plugs (NGKR and Bosch). I have set the dizzy by getting piston1 to TDC then adjusting the dizzy to suit. I never timed the engine up but it was done by the guy who built it and he has built alot of a-series engines so i cnt see why it would be wrong. I have run out of ideas and can't even get it to fire on the odd occasion. PLEASE help.

Thanks
Graham

Have you had the distributor drive out?

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

this happens ...and it pisses many peeps off *frown*

first thing dont panic! check that the distrib timings is right in relation to the firing order 1,4,3,2 CORRECT!!!!.......... *Yes*

then make sure you have fuel pressure

remove the plenum chamber and put a capfull of fuel directeley in the carb mouth see if it fires ...........if it does connect everyting up and try again!

the problem will lie with the above mentioned ............................................anyone else..???

Not 1-4-3-2 Steve,

1-3-4-2 is the correct firing order
Just spotted.

Just make sure your distributor drive is close to where it should be. Set at TDC No1 cylinder and check that HT 1 is to fire.

It can only be fuel or ignition so you need to rule one out. If you have a decent spark (and check the timing as above) then you have to assume fuel.

I use a bit of easy start down the carb (or into the plenum). If it fires then the ignition is fine and it is fuel. If it doesn't then it is ignition.

Live @ Worksop, Work @ Rotherham

remember there are 2 TDC, make sure you have TDC with both valves closed as the piston rises

In the garage......again!!

could the needle in the float be stuck , not allowing fuel into the bowl?.

You need to pull the dizzy and then screw a bolt into the drive that is retained in the block. Pull it out and re-engage it so the slot is angled toward 2 o'clock with the smaller section on the top.

From memory I think that's the correct way I'm sure someone can confirm or correct that, it's also described in the Metro Haynes with diagram though if you have one. I believe the Mini Haynes is 180° out, worth bearing in mind.

This had me stumped for quite a while.

Thanks to eveyone for the help. I forgot to add, the engine was built last year and has been sat for a while so we towed it round the block in second gear and she fired up straight away I was out slightly with the timing but was corrected by a friend. Thanks again for the help!! Graham
