I want to turn down some steel bar and cut a screw thread on the end, am I right in thinking that for a 1/2" UNF thread I simply turn it down to 1/2" diameter and for 5/16" UNF thread I turn it down to 5/16" diameter?

I realise it sounds bleeding obvious to anyone who works in a machine shop day in day out but if it's possible to screw it up I will.

No Rob, for a 1/2 in bar to be screw cut you will need to turn the OD to .625 , this will give you plenty of extra dia when you fook it up ,lol. so you can try again, eventually by the time you know what your doing , it will end up at .500".lol.
