The wife has a gateway laptop, which has a pretty fancy heatsink with oil-cooling lines taking heat away from the CPU and another thing to a finned area that the fan cools.
The fan works, as it spins for around 1 second after starting - presumably for some kind of 'self test' mode?

Anyways - it doesn't stat up again, till around 1 second before the computer shuts down because the processor (or the other thing - LOL) has overheated. Clearly, the temp control or whatever tells the fan to come on is all to cock.

Anyone got any thoughts on if the fan be 'hard wired' - say via the USB socket or whatever so it's always on (when the laptop is)? Or is there a simple fix for the temperature thing that is clearly 'out of calibration'?

I seem to recall when i used to play with computers I could find a processor temp / fan speed somewhere in the settings. I can't find it anywhere now though; not sure if that'd help me mind?

I think it is usually in the bios on startup?

Might be different on a laptop though...

Laptops are a tad tricky as most of them are bespoke so motherboards are completely different.

If the fan has 3 wires going to it, the middle one (usually orange) can be wired direct to the live (red) this would trick the fan into thinking the laptop has a signal.

Hope this helps? Let me know how you get on buddy.

Cheers

Oh and im assuming you have been in the bios and messed around with the temp settings, some bios's dont have them. Check the CPU Max temp.

It is a 4-wire fan. Red, black, white, yellow. I checked in Bios on startup, but there was nothing on the fans in there. In fact, there was not much in there compared to desktops I've used in the past...

Am i right in thinking there are many different versions of BIOS? I just checked my works desktop, and this has even less than the laptop did (which is less again than I remember on my old machines).

Just to clarify, there was nowhere in the BIOS for fan speeds / settings, let alone where to turn it on or off....
Keep the help coming guys!!!! This is good stuff!

BTW - I've already tried a different (albeit used) fan, and it is exactly the same,,,
