just looking to see what sort of trailers you guys use to move your cars about.

We had a big old 4 wheel one for years until a friend borrowed it - we now have a 3 wheel trailer!

I then bought a small 4 wheeler which only just fits the mini (I had to alter the ramps to let the estate on it). However, as all trips to shows are a good motorway distance, I don't fancy using this trailer as its not got brakes and is probably a bit ropey in places, albeit, it tows well.

Ideally I'm looking for a galvanised one that I can forget about other than servicing the hubs, brakes etc. The question being asked though is do I go for a 2 or 4 wheel trailer.

The pros for the 2 wheel one is that it will be small, light, easy to store, less attractive for thieves, those that would like to borrow and cost. Cons are that it won't carry so much and possibly more load on the tow hitch?

The pros for the 4 wheel are, stability, able to carry more and more versatile; cons are cost, risk of theft and people wanting to borrow.

your thoughts are welcome!

Rob

I would have a 4 wheel, purely for stability!

I've got a two wheel trailer, I find it very stable, towing up to 100mph (private road) I suppose it all depends what your towing it with, as 4 wheel trailers are often heavier

Having towed a variety of trailers my favorite is my mates two wheel job that was made from an old caravan, really predictable especially when reversing.

Twin axle every time for me. They do tend to be more stable, but I have towed single axle that were fine too. The advantage of twin axle is that you can lose a wheel, be that puncture, or hub failure and you will not lose your load (i.e. you pride and joy). with a single axle if you lose a wheel it could be curtains..

There is only one disadvantage to a twin axle and that is that you can pull your guts out trying to turn it manually, even if you try lifting the front on the jockey wheel. All else is a plus.

my old trailer (now nics) was brilliant. twin axle prg trailers minisport. perfect size for a mini, wind the lockey wheel right up so the front axles off the floor and its easily manouverable on your own. tows brilliantly.

http://www.prgtrailers.co.uk/about.htm

if a twin axle trailer weaves then either its knackered or most probable cause is its loaded wrong, rear heavey.

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

I agree with Carl on that one, my dad has a fairly big twin axle brian james, I've moved all sorts on it from minis/205 etc up to Zafiras/Discos. Only time I ever had a problem was when I had an MR2 on it and didn't even consider the fact that they are mid engined. Anything over 45mph and it weaved about, luckily I didn't have far to go.

I must admit, when the wheel bearing locked up on my trailer (single axle) while I was doing about 85mph, I did shit myself, I manged to keep the mini on the trailer and make it to the hard shoulder without hitting anything. maybe it would have been better with a twin axel

Was that the Norwegian one Jim? It did also seem a bit softly sprung.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

i've got a twin axle fountain trailer.

it tows also very well at 100mph on a private road with no issues.

Nice size, goes in a single garage, its 6'6" wide and about 15' long.

http://www.fountain-trailers.com/main_frame.html

i've got the C100 with a few options.

Good thing about these is they galv them properly in a hot bath after cutting so should stay in very good nick. some i believe are cold galv'd which is no where near as good.

(i dont know the ins and outs, just the hot is better than cold *happy*)

oh yeah, was about £1400 new, and to be honest you seem to get second hand similar trailers for £1000ish so i didnt even consider them since i will be owning it a long time.

I've just been offered an old horse box, so I might be going down the pikey route and building my own.
