Answer me this. A little debate weve been having at work. (because were sad)

Your travelling along in your car at 80mhp, the wind is also blowing at 80mph in the same direction you are travelling.

What happens when you stick your head out the window? *oh well*

Yeah cos the wind is doing the same speed as the car you wont feel the tailwind.

Hmm but there'd be no "wind"/air to hit your face as its moving in the same direction you are?!

I seriously doubt it!

If you are traveling away from the 'wind' at 80mph and the wind is aproaching you at 80mph, then relative wind speed will be zero

you would still feel "wind"

if you think you have to break through the air in front of you! oh and if its 80 mph its speeding! think of a wind tunnel! why do they blow air over the car? to create the affect of you breaking though the air!

What about the flow of air your car is cutting through? Surely you'd still be able to hand surf?

Hmm im unsure, as the wind is pushin the air particles along with you so surely you would feel nothing.

There is no net velocity difference between the flow or air and the car speed, hence it would feel still out of the car.

in the real world you would feel wind due to tyhe turbulence around the car,

but theoreticaly you wouldnt feel it.

But would there be any turbulence due to the wind and car travelling at the same velocity??

The only turbulance you would get is the fact that 'wind' in nature is not consistant in its speed or direction.

Setting up a wind tunnel and blowing air over the car to simulate the car traveling at 80mph will generate turbulance, but if the car was also traveling at 80mph in the same direction as the wind then there would be no turbulance, its just like turning off that big fan *wink*

There will always be some differences, but for the sake of the question in hand, you wont feel any wind.

Oh and of all the people, the physics teacher should know this, lol

he he lets put it this way

If you were on a rolling road doing 80mph and you stuck your head out of the window, would you feel any wind?

*laughing*

The wind in front of your head wouldn't be travelling at 80mph, as your head would be in the way, so I'm guessing that you would feel wind on the side of your head in the direction of travel.

??

What sort of bendy world do you live in, lol

Edit Edit, I take that back, there may well be a similar effect to aerodynamics generating lift, but thats pressures not velocities.

There you I just added another dimention, think that one over *laughing*

Cant you tell I have nothing to do at work today *tongue*

Too right!

They use the wind tunnel to see how the "wind" passes over the car, for the majority of situations where the wind isn't going at the exact same constant speed in the exact same direction like in the question!

You wouldn't be breaking through any stationary wind or wind traveling in a different speed/direction as you travel along as that wind ahead of you will be going 80mph aswell.

So I reckon you wouldn't feel anything, no turbulence as nothing is passing over the car to disturb the flow of the air doing the same speed as you!

Took me abit of thinking!

yes, as the ground is traveling at 0mph, so there must be some transition there.
