hi, iv been fitting mk1 light conversion plates to the back of my mini.

2 weeks ago the top coat of primer reacted back to bare metal on one side (about 2mm deep).

i stripped back to metal. have built it ip again using good quality filler, sanding dry and not using any paint.

have just mixed high build 2k primer, degreased the whole area (leaving time to dry) then sprayed both sides. both sides have started to react.

i dont know what to do next.

there were a few areas of bare metal, should i rub back to filler/metal then use etch primer? this is all i can think of. this really has taken me weeks now.

wish i had kept the square lights.

i would say rub back again.

are you using the same cloth/degreaser as to when it first reacted?

my adivse would be get a fresh cloth and some fresh degreaser as it could all be down to that!

once you have those start again.

although somebody else may say different as i am no paint expert.

I personally always use 2k etch first on "whatever" - it seems to be able to act as an isolator between whatever was on before, and the 2k primer I use (cheap stuff off eBay) after the etch.

Your problems seem somewhat more fundamental, there must be something in the surface that is causing this, I assume you have tried the primer on on a bit of scrap without problem?

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Where abouts is the reaction? (on the filler area or steel)

Without a doubt its where you have degreased it and it has soaked into the filler or aerosol primer. If you leave it to dry out longer before the 2k primer or whatever youre using it should be fine. Ive had the same problem myself before.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

thanks for the advice. iv just been down to the garage. what i thought were major reactions were small crazed areas which im sure will rub back. i will have another go the weekend, hopefully get another coat of primer on it. would upload pics of the finished article if i knew how!! fingers crossed that the crazed areas will flatten out and there will be no further reaction...

the reaction seems to be around the patches of filler and patches of bare metal. ta

In that case its definately the degreaser not drying out fully. Leave it 1/2 hour or so

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Dont bother with the etch mate that will just agravate it more.

Etch is mainly for bare metal it will just eat into the 2k and filler
