Hi all

Ok, I have had this annoying noise for a while and now I'm getting really peeed off with it. Basically it only happens when braking and the noise (listening from the inside of the car) sounds like it is coming from the otherside of the bulkhead. It is a sort of "old door" creaking noise. I know the plenum was rubbing on the bulkhead but i shifted the engine forwards with an adjustable engine steady to sort that. The gap between plenum and bulkhead is about 1.5cm. Do you think under braking the engine will move this much and the noise I am hearing is the plenum still fouling the bulkhead? Even if I am moving very slowly like in traffic it still happens. Can anybody suggest anything else that might make this noise?

Cheers
Rich

Check your floors for cracks around the subframe mounts.

have you checked the exhaust for clearance as it passes the frame into the tunnel? I'm not running a turbo at the moment but I recall the last one I worked on was tight

Just to confirm my thinking, am I right in saying that under braking the engine actually shifts forwards and shifts back on acceleration?? This being the case the noise can't be the plenum fouling the bulkhead??

my mates mini had a similar thing, it was the bulkhead bracket for the std engine steady (the one that sandwiched the steady with the master cylinder base plate

eventually the lower piece of metal (that comes off the bulkhead) snapped off

I had a very similar thing and checked all my subframe mountings and stabilisers only to eventually find it was one of the U bolts that holds the rack in place had cracked right through. Woth a look. You have my sympathy though there is nothing worse than a mysterious squeak!
