The mini's nearly ready for it's mot! Everything is up and running, but there's just a couple of bits that are bothering me.

Sorry in advance for the waffling.

1. Everything seems to be getting really hot. it's got a brand new water pump, thermostat (with the holes) coolant etc and the 'guessometer' reads normal. But everything seems a lot hotter than my previous engine. I don't think that the ignition is too retarded, but I will upload an image of my map and see what you think. Which leads me onto...

2. I've got to drive to (and from) the MOT centre and then onto the rolling road before my car will be mapped properly. What map do you think I'll be better off using for this? I'm currently using Carls map, but there's been quite a few changes since then. The main one being the CR, up from 7.8:1 to 8.4:1.

Obviously I'll be taking it really easy, but I wondered if I would be better off on the standard Metro Turbo map?

3. Back on the heat. The alternator is getting really hot. I'm not sure if it's just because of the under-bonnet temps or if it's just normal for the Nippon Denso types to get hot.

I think the belt has been slipping on the pulley. Could this be enough to heat it right up from the friction?

Any help will be greatly appreciated as always.

Is it a new engine? Could just be it needs to be run in as they do tend to run a bit hotter when new.

It's not new. It's been running for about 3000 miles in Carl's car.

If the only change is the CR then retard the ignion on boost. If it's at 25 deg already I'd leave it where it is.

Knowing the engine (have you changed the head?) 7000rpm is a bit optermistic.

Anyway, that looks nice and safe to me. Lots of scope to improve the economy on cruise though.

What about the under-bonnet/alternator temps?

I did consider that, but I've only run it in the evenings when it's been relatively cool. It's literally poodled 20 metres up the road and back, then left to run for a few mins while I've been adjusting the mixture.

I've just ordered a 74deg stat as it's got a 80somthing deg one in there at the moment. I'm sure that it's not this though as the rad is chucking out loads of heat as well.

dont forget to drill 6 x 5mm holes in the out side of the rim of the sat and see how it goes

ignition timing and fueling has a big part to play!

If anything, it's running rich.

The Nippon Denso does tend to run warm to the touch

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

I wouldn't mind if it was warm, but it's too hot to touch.

the slipping belt will generate a fair bit of heat, give it a tweak

that advance below 2000 is way to much in the high vacuum areas..

try it at 12 to 15degrees in a block below 2k and 100 kpa see what that does ?

Medusa + injection = too much torque for the dyno ..https://youtu.be/qg5o0_tJxYM

Ok, bit of an update.

The belt no longer slips and is running cooler. But after tightening it up, the water pump has started to piss coolant everywhere :(

I will give the timing a tweak as per Roberts suggestion and report back.

Cheers Guys

Update

I've stopped the belt from slipping, but it still gets too hot to touch, as does the carb. This is all with the bonnet left off so who knows what sort of temps will be generated with it on.

Could the fueling/timing be so far out that it makes this much heat, or do I need to plumb in an auxiliary rad (Heater matrix)?

It's got a Minispares super 2 core rad that's less than a year old and I've just added a 74deg stat and an electric fan on the inner wing from a front mounted metro rad to try and help.

The Gussometer still reads 'normal'.
