Hi

Had a bad 2 days in the garage one way and another. I have now hit another stumbling block.

I need to time the cam in to 106 degrees ATDC, I bought an adjustable duplex timing kit to allow me to do this perfectly, however I cannot seem to get the large sprocket to line up with the holes on the mounting boss to allow me the 2 degrees adjustment I need, I am currently at 107 degrees which I could probably accept.


The issue is there is no chance the dowel is going to slot in any of the holes as they are. When I do get the holes lined up the timing is miles out and there then is not the adjustment there to correct it. What the hell is going on here, am I being really thick and missing a trick?

Here illustrates the point that the dowel isn't going in anywhere near the right timing.

I dont like dowell adjustment, I prefer the vernier.
Have you tried taking it off and turn the outer ring by 1 tooth in the chain?

Fit the pulley with a dowel in. Get the timming as close as you can as if setting with a fixed pulley and then remove the dowel and adjust from there. Had a similar problem a few years ago.

as abouve you need to move the chain on the gear first then the dowel to alow 30' increments of adjustment.

After 2 hours I'm still not close enough, I'm temped to stuff the fucking rubbish in a bin and buy verneers. If I'd known how much hassle it would have been I certainly would have in the first place.

My plans to get the engine in before sunday and put some running in miles on it are completely ruined now. I have work commitments after that so its now not going in till september. Well demotivated now.

I used to run one and they are an absolute pain in the arse to get spot on, but what you need is a 1 degree of set woodruff key an conjunction with the doweled duplex to allow you from 107 to 106

I find them OK. Line it up with a standard one, then you'll see where to begin. That works.

Vegard and Paul have the clue. You started with the chain on the wrong tooth of the cam gear to get anything lined up. Pull the cam gear off. With the crank keyway at TDC the cam key should be at 1 o'clock. As you bring the cam gear up to fit it on the cam, you can see if any holes will be lining up, if not reposition the cam gear in the chain.

I was having a conversation with a mate last night on this very subject. He advised me that when fitting cams to his engine builds he would add an extra 2 degrees onto the the timming figure required run the engine in and then re-check the timing.

What he always found was that that after the initial running in the chain would strech and give him the exact timming figure he required. He swares by this method, the one time he set it bang on the numbers when he came to re-check the timing it was way out.

So I would go with the 107 degrees run it in then re check.

I have tried with dowl type before and never done it, verniers are worth the £80 odd in my opinion!

I sorted it by the way, the issue was that you have to line the sprockets up with the dots facing each other (though there is no dot on the large sprocket) so I just placed the duplex on top of the single chain and lined the keyways up, that way I could get the slight adjustmet required.

it was me not the product in the wrong!
