For all those who ask whether they can "get away with" the standard diff.....

Unknown history, bought off ebay for the casing alone (a DAM 5626 at last :) ) but appears low mileage as the dog teeth are not worn.
The last time I saw a diff pin like that, it had worn a little bit further then came out in three pieces, one of them making its own exit through the bottom of the casing when it got trapped under the crownwheel (hence me being after a spare DAM 5626 casing).

The only other intersting bit...

No spacer ???

I thought the spacer was only omitted on the turbo box, but this has a 3.44 FD.

Or has someone rebuilt it and just forgotten to put the spacer in ??? The CWP pinion nut had a new locktab and was virtually hand tight once I'd bent the tab back (No Volvo vice required this time :) ) so it obviously wasn't rebuilt properly.

If there is a raised 'pad' in the centre of the gear face on the outputs, it would have originally had a spacer. If there is no raised pad, it never had a spacer.

edit... going back to check...

Right, one on the left from this diff, one on right from a much earlier one (and the type I'm used to)

So no spacer = no pad.
I knew the "no-spacer" ones were different as the build notes for the X-pin diff says you have to use the output gears from a "spacer" diff but I expected the "no spacer" to have longer raised stubs *frown**frown**frown*
First time I've actually seen one like this.
The machining is crap compared to the earlier one.

So which gearboxes were "spacer-less" ???

I never took this apart but i assume it was because of the single pin. The problem was it still drove ok and i didnt hear a bang,, the oil came out, no light came on and the engine siezed.

I didn't get a "bang" either on the one that failed on me - just a small jolt (like driving over a speed hump) as 1/3 of the pin got trapped and punched the hole.
Luckily I was flashed from behind by lots of other motorists as I left a cloud of blue smoke (escaping oil burning on the exhaust) so I pulled over and saved the engine.
