hello guys

the only way i can get fuel through the carb is to blow down the overflow pipe and immediately block it off. once thats done and the engine is turned over i can see fuel pulse up through from where the needle normally sits(dashpot ect is off at the minute).

as soon as i let off the overflow pipe the fuel is sucked back down into the carb.

i checked the breather pipe on the tank and it was jammed up against the rear seat so i released that but its still the same ?

car is a N/A 1330 with hif44 carb

What pump are you using? And is it pumping fuel when disconnected from the carb?

So there is nothing wrong.

Fuel will only come out the nozzle when the velocity over the bridge creates a negative pressure.

If you have the SU piston out and look down into the jet hole and shake the car you should be able to see the fuel level just below the jet. If you can't, then the float chamber level is too low and this probably means that the float valve is plugged or the float is mis-adjusted.. I would suspect a bad valve.

Pressurising the float chamber just forces the fuel up the jet hole, which is the only place it can go..

I would be inclined to suggest float falve gunged up, you ran the ank dry not so long ago and you are not using any inline filters, i cant think of anything else buddy. when you brought it to me it was running on three cylinders, i believe you and Jordie have checked the coil etc and it is ok, so i am stumped buddy.

from the rad

11 - 13 - 12 - 11 i dunno what thats measured in but it came in the green on all of them.

im guessing thats good enough to get it running ?

i definately have a spark on all 4. atleast they all spark when resting on the slam panel.

richie give me that weber sitting on youre bench lol

compressions are fine. You allow for a couple lee way. Defo a spark at all plugs, the engine doesnt seem to like those NGK's so try using the champion ones when it does run again.

We;ve tried two carbs, same problem. I believe tom is trying a 3rd, so will see what happens.

What made you decide that the fuel was OK? are the plugs getting wet? if so and you have a spark then next is to check the firing order.

Get#1 on the compression stroke ( tdc and both rocker arms UP) and make sure the dizzy rotor arm points to the wire that goes to #1 spark plug then anticlockwise from there wires 3,4,2 should be connected in that order..

If that doesn't work you need to decide what you have touched since it last run..

got hold of a timing light and it was miles out, put it somewhere near and it really tried to run at one point but as soon as the engine tries to go, the starter motor lets off the flywheel and the engine dies... its as if it needs to turn it over a few times and get it running before it disengages

atleast we know what the problem is now

new starter on it, timing set, different coil(cheers richie), new plugs and a mess with fuelling and it runs like a dream !

took it out and had a blare around the streets and made the last few weeks of fiddling worth it :)

massive thankyou to jordieNE for all the help
