i rebuilt a gearbox with sccr gearset. stupidly i put the 3.44 final drive in it. do i have to strip the gearbox to change the pinion wheel to the 2.9 one i have?

the main shaft nut next to the pinion wheel are stupidly tight.if i could undo this things would be simple. it would really piss me off to strip 2 gearboxes and put them back together again just to change the final drive.

anyone know of an easy way?many thanks

Is the box on the engine/fitted in car?

If not its an easy job.

Lock the gear box and undo the pinion nut, change pinion refit, obviously you will need to remove the diff housing to change the crown wheel.

Assuming its out of the car, if you take the speedo housing thingy off the end and have a deep socket and long extension, as you will have the diff casing off anyway, you can defeat the interlock and engage 1st and 4th together and just undo it from the speedo end with the gears locked.

thanks, but this seems like a silly question, how exactly do i lock the gearbox? its out of the car, speedo and diff housings are removed. cheers

You need to select first (or second) and third (or forth) gear at the same time. To do this you need to fully rotate the gear selector rod so it does not mate with the forks, and to do this you need to remove the little ball & spring thing hidden behind one of the side plates on the diff housing. Does that make any sense at all? if not I'm sure someone will be able to explain it a bit better.

yes, went and did it with my sc gearbox before i read that. but thanks!

the selector seems to be jammed right in on the gearbox im taking the final drive out of to use in the sc one. not sure if its all the debris in the box from storage or what. anyone got any ideas?

Exactly, just add to "the little ball and spring thing...", "and the steel tube" as its the steel tube the ball and spring are in that actually stops the interlock tube from releasing.

I wish I had a good photo, so hard to describe in words....
