Howdy,

Ok, had a couple issues over weekend.
I rebuilt the carb (basic gasket kit) and not sure if its done right :(

I had a diagram of a HIF44 turbo with the kit but its slightly different to my setup (has stepper motor in the diagram)
Anyway, on the throttle spindle, I have put it all back together the way I took it apart however the seal on the throttle shaft on the accelerator side has started to come out.
If you look at the carby, you can see the nut, then lock washer, then spring, then rubber seal. Is anything meant to hold the seal 'in' ? its coming out and touching the throttle return spring.

Also, the head gasket blew on three places... so I replaced that.
Its running 'ok' but sounds like a lawnmower. Its almost like a miss... rough. I have vacuum, same as before, starts fine, gets on and holds boost.

If the rocker adjustment is not right would it run rough? Ie/ If the rockers are opened up too much?

Anyone got exploded diagrams of the turbo carb? I have trawled google for hours and cant find what I need :(

The other seals (on choke and other side of throttle spindle) are fine... its just the one coming out. I would expect that would be a problem ie/ a vacuum leak or a boost leak but it doesnt seem to be an issue at the moment

Oh $hIT! Ok, just found Toms thread on the HIF44 rebuild... in this pic you see the nylon washer on the outside... looks like I have the seal and nylon washers on backwards :(

Would that stuff around how it runs?

ok, so I fixed the seals - im an idiot... anyway, thats corrected.
Since I had it out, I thought I would block the pop-off valve. Didnt have another disk so just welded it up and used the same one.
All good there, looks like a perfect seal when all assembled.

Anyhow, I start the car up, and its idling really high now. Vacuum is perfect (as it was before) and the car is idling nice and smooth...

Just a really high idle.

Could the new carb kit affect idle? I changed the dashpot O-ring, float bowl O-ring, choke outer seal, throttle outer seals and the piston dampner gasket (as well as manifold gasket etc)
Float was not removed... etc.

Obviously if I remove the dashpot dampner idle comes down... its still got the engine oil in it (20w50)

Why would it idle so high now?

I changed the head gasket also, but its all good on that front...

Confused :(

Could you have distorted the butterfly when you welded (?) up the pop-off valve. When you say it looks like a perfect seal are you just looking at the pop-off valve, because the butterfly may no longer be a good fit in the carb body if it distorted with the heat.

I meant the butterfly looks perfect. Bronze soldered it, not welded - sorry should have said that earlier.

Ill pull it off tomorrow and check with a light, looked perfect though (butterfly seal)

Did you seat the butterfly properly - ie barely nip the screws up, then open and shut the butterfly spindle a few times, then tighten the screws with it shut?

Next - just check the idle screw adjuster and the choke fast-idle screw to see they are properly adjusted.
