Hello everyone mot on thurs! need to check mixture b4 just to get it there though . I bought a colour tune kit but Im not that confident with it . is there another way of initially setting up the carb ie screw the mixture screw right in then 3 turns back something like that ? just worried as its a new engine and im driving bout 10 miles to centre. what should i be aiming for regards to % 3? at idle stu gurr profiled needle on old 1275 bini kit how far out would this needle be now its a 1293 with dished pistons no comp plate etc, he said it should be ok for running in but `ok` doesnt give me much confidence .

I'm in the same situation.

Rollers on Saturday, but I've got to drive quite a way to get there.

I'm just going to turn the boost right down and take it very slowly.

P.s - It would really help the readability of your post if you use the button that looks like this...

on the HIF "out" is lean

with the engine idling wind it out til it starts to become uneven, then wind it back a turn.

that should be ok for the mot. most places will wteak it if need be especially is you ask nicley

with the needle stuart was refering to it being ok to drive on, just dont go booting it about in case it does go a bit lean.

yeah, take it very gentle and listen for pinking. Mixture at idle shouldn't do any damage i wouldn't have thought...

Just don't let it go lean under boost.

Ive got a problem with my mixture at the moment.

Its fine at idle if not set abit too fast, but it hesitates under load at low rpm's, then free's up and rev's smoothly after.

In the hot weather it runs really well, but when it gets cold its bloody awfull to drive, i spoke to Stefaz who said its too rich, as when it gets cold the fuel is denser and fooks things up, but is more viscous when its hot.

I've tried winding it back but its still crap, got the most annoying missfire at around 60-70mph at 4k, means its really hard to do motorway speeds!! Duno where to start :(

grey, the tickover mixture screw is down the back of the carb on the drivers side pointing toward the driver from down its hole.

rich mini, i'd try thinner dashpot oil,or maybe just changing it.

as the dash pot oil becomes thicker in the cold it increases the initial richness when you depress the throttle as it stops the dashpot rising as quick.

yeah cheers i know where the screw is , i just read a post saying u can take off dashpot and check where the valve in the centre is in terms of initial setting up of the carb after a rebuild , any ideas? i just cant remember how high the brass thingy should be.

TBH ive never looked at that, always just gone by fiddling with the screw.

Aha thanks for the advice!!

I did a search a week or two ago and decided to use DOT4 brake fluid in the dashpot! Shall I swap it out for some normal engine oil? All i've got is 20w 50

Sorry for the hijack by the way:$

That works for me, it would not be far off if you set the idle that way, Use 20w50 oil (Genuine SU dashpot oil is 20weight) the rest is down to the shape of the needle and nowt you can do there by twiddlin the adjusters!
