Now when the engine is cold spot on 65Lbs oil pressure, but when hot 25ish and when nailed for a few miles 20ish, now if this was an aspirated engine I would be pulling the engine out to freshen it up, does the same apply to a turbo as I have limited knowledge with turbo engines ?

What oil temps do you have?

Honestly, there is only one thing that gives low oil pressure, and that is excessive clearance around the crankshaft, possibly camshaft.

Tried a different oil, might be a cheaper option or prove your theory correct. *wink*

I wouldn't worry about 20 psi @ tickover.

thats fine then, infact not bad at all.

as long as it picks up by about 3k ish to 40 odd psi or upwards depending on the relief valve.

from the turbo's point of view you want between about 30-60 psi when on boost

The figures you have quoted are pretty much identical to mine. My engine has only done approx 250 miles and all the components were new. The instant the revs start to rise from 1000 rpm the pressure shoots up to 65-70.

hello
Looking at all your replies about oil pressure is it bad if it's on the other end of the scale mine is off the gauge when cold and comes down to about 60 when hot and had a bit of sport
Thanks

sounds like the oil relief needs a clean or replacing. They can stick.

alan,

is that 60 driving or at idle?

it woulnt hurt to turn it down a bit.

if the oil pressure is on the high side I have heard it can push past the turbo seals a bit.

to drop the pressure you can take the oil relif valve cap off (jusrt above the stater motor) and cut the spring down a little, i'd cut one coil off, and see how it is, if its a bit low you can pop a washer or two in to bring it back up a bit.

Mine was 65 ish when cold ticking over and 15 when hot (ticking over) as soon as you aply any throttle it went straight up again.
I allways thaught i had a problem, well when it was first built i put the old oil cooler on off the metro and put it down to that scoring the pump and bearings, i flushed it thru and new pump and bearings and was prety much the same.

20 hot at idel is a bit low tbh you read in magizines tha that presure is ok but have never seen any of my engines drop below 40 on tick over and 60 at full chat even with an oil temp +102ey read +/- 30psi sounds like main bearing wear but should keep going for another while rember Rover Oil lite on was
12psi

Was getting worried about my oil pressure until I read some of this. When N/A it ran 40/45 lbs hot at running speeds, say 3000rpm,but since I added the magic puffer it has dropped to 30/35 and about 15/20 at idle. I put this down to the oil feed to the turbo taking some flow and dropping the pressure as I am running a N/A pump.No knocks, smoke or any other bad signs, but I am reluctant to put it on the rollers until I have at least replaced the pump and bearings to see if I can regain some oil presure. Is it significant that I am taking the oil pressure reading from the big banjo bolt that feeds the oil filter, rather than from the usual place - where the oil pressure switch is located ?.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

your problem may lie with the crank EVEN wear around 1/2 to 1 though
i bet you have not had the crank ground ....spot on

if at all..?
dont worry at all .... unless your a Perfectionist
upgrade the oil to 20/50 changed every 1000 mile, no need for bling oil, i can assure you........... and have fun!
