that would be my first guess, the rear wheel cylinders.

Do you know in all my years of playing with minis I have never had to change a rear cylinder !!! Lucky Or what

Are the bastads to get off ??
Can I leave the backplate in place ?

yeah easy enough, no need to remove the backplate.
but beware as the brake pipe has a tendancy to snap!
not a major problem i know, but it can be annoying if you cant get a new piece untill the next day!

erm not quite!!!!

The hard part of the job is holding the cylinder in place while you struggle with the clip.

So the way to do it is......

Get a pair of mole grips, more or less any will do.
Clamp them onto the edge of the hub (e.g. next to the wheel stud) with the mole grips 'backwards' or so that the fixed jaw is towards the drum backplate.
This has the effect of pushing the cylinder firmly into the backplate, leaving you with 2 hands free to fit the clip. You will be suprised how easy it is when you haven;t got to struggle with the cylinder at the same time!

worked for a place called evesham mini centre which was unsuprisingly in evesham!! Was the local place that I used to use for all bits and bobs I needed and so got to know the gaffer well and so used to work there during my time off from university during summer and xmas etc.
You would think that working with Minis all the time would be fun but really it just used to spoil your hobby, after working on peoples run into the ground sheds doing bl**dy balljoints again and again, by the time you got home the last thing you wanted to do was go in the garage and work on your own car. But having said that there was the odd enjoyable job such as rebuilding a Mini Moke that then went to Portugal, but as well as that you soon learn how to do the common jobs quickly and also the tricks that make them easier. That wheel cylinder one is great.

yeah, its a lot cheaper for an adjustable one than a new limiter valve. my mate had one go a while back. i think they're about £120 brand new.

all it does is lets you adjust the front/rear split of the brakes i think. and doesn't cost the earth.
