Basically i have finally got my turbo lump up and running. The problem is that as soon as the engine begins to get warm it starts smoking from the breather on the clutch casing. It is clear smoke but does smell some what.

When the engine is started from cold there is no smoke but as it warns up it gradually gets worse. I noticed that more comes out as the throttle is opened.

Can anyone please tell me what may be causing it and how i could maybe prevent it.

Thanks

Tom

Similar to this. Just not quite so bad and the fact that it is coming from the breather.

sounds like normal blow by what you need to do Is temporarily block the hole the smoke is coming from with you hand and then rlease, you should only feel a light presure if after a few seconds you can no longery keep the presure then I would supect blow by or head gasket,

Paul.

some history about the engine and problem would be nice but otherwise the most probable answer is a hole in a piston

The engine has just been built which is why i would be rather concerned if it were a hole in the piston. Paul, i have tried doing what you said by putting my hand over the breather. I could easily keep my hand over it to withstand the pressure for ages. Not once did the pressure build up so much that i could not hold it. I have noticed a small trace of water between the head and block in the place that the engine number should go. May just try pinching the head studs down slightly. Could this all be related to a head gasket by any chance? TBH the engine did not seem to smoke so much this morning as it did last night. Infact, i could hardly see any.

Thanks for the help

When i got smoke from there, it was pistons cracked on the ring lands. Its going to be a strip down job to find out why. Depends how dense the smoke is. My engine run fine except for the smoke.

From what you have said it sounds most likely to be just the rings bedding to the bore it is normal on a fresh motor to get a little blow by during the bedding in period the water at the stamp plat is most like to be a leak at the temp sender directly above that area of the block try a little PTFE tape on the sender to seal it, re check the torque on the head bolts but I would not be to wore just yet as long as you can easily hold back the pressure and there is no plums of white smoke from the exhaust you should be fine,
regards,
Paul.

Mine did this when the head gasket went (2nd time).

Get a few miles on it first. If it doesn't clear, go for the gasket.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

Sounds like it could be rings. Have a go at doing a compression test dry, then do another wet. Should point out if they are at fault.

But like paul says, it could just be a bedding in issue.

My engine smoked loads when I first started it on fresh rings. Put some miles on it monitoring it as you go, you'll probably find it'll stop smoking very quickly if this is the case.
