Alright "K" guys, we are in the process of prototyping the carbon airbox, its designed to go in a round nose car though its shown on a clubby for pic purposes, the filter can be mounted off the end of the box as shown or on a length of zip tube.

it will be all carbon, no glass and suitable for K1100/K100/K1200 throttle bodies.

As a bit of market research how much would a punter expect to pay for the airbox without the filter?

It'll be at MITP for those interested.

cheers

John

yeah, that sounds about right to me too.

but should it not be a fact of what price you can successfully produce, sell and benifit from them? i know obviously you dont want to overprice them straight away but would it not be best to stick up what price you would be expecting them to sell for and then seeing if there is interest at that price?

im not trying to look like i know more about this than you afterall your the owner and operator of a VERY successfull buisness with this stuff, its just what im thinking. sorry if it comes across wrong.

I dont know any engineering places that would make a custom air box like this for £50-£80 out of metal, nevermind carbon, and to make something as detailed as this out of carbon takes alot more skill and time to get right!
I reckon its definatley worth more than £50, look at the price of carbon bits! Maybe £50 if it was made from fibreglass or plastic...

I think Jim was joking folks!

£50 wouldn't buy the airfilter never mind the carbon part lol!

Whatever it'll cost you to make 10 off, double it, then divide by ten. Bosh. There is a max price that folks will pay. Realistic selling price might be less than that of course!

Tidy little airbox.

Looking at the Demon Tweeks catalog you are looking at £200 - £300 for similar items (arbit for twin webers) but as I'm sure you've already noticed the Mini scene is full of tight arses so you may have to look at selling them for slightly less, as a side note will they fit on a BMW motorbike? just thinking about other potential markets.

Totally side tracking I need to have a quick chat with you at Avon regarding one of my rear hubs and mounting my speedo sensor.

They look really neat John! I would think something in the region of £150? *oh well*

Is there provisions for an IAT sensor?

yea maybe my price was a bit low.

I would be interested in a 100% sealed one which I could push some boost through

WOW that is some beautiful weave on that carbon...
Ive been looking around at the prices for airbox's on 4 cylinder engines and they start at about £150 and go up to £350 depending on what badge you have on your bonnet...
If thats a prototype id love to see the final product...Do you have any pics of the airbox off the car?
Look forward to having a peek at mini in the park.

I just paid £120 + VAT for ITG to make me a filter to fit my round nose (twin 40 throttle bodies) and I supplied some of the materials (tubing)

Too true! It drives me mad.

Anyway, I would be expect to pay £300 - £350 for the airbox. It's a beautiful piece of kit

Yes its sealed - the cut out is moulded in to clear the throttle actuation on K ITB's - you can't do it without one.

Thanks for the comments on the pricing guys

Looks good john. I like it. As for prices, in pure carbon i would put a price of about £200 on it, theres a lot of layup involved in that and given the price of carbon i think thats realistic. We had a new pair of brake ducts made for one of the f1s this year, and they came out at £500 a pair and they are a lot easier to layup.
