As my new cam is leaking once again, fck knows whats going on there. im going to change to a Duplex Timing Gear & Chain.
But im only used to the belt ones. so i've never installed a chain before. so do i need a standard one, or an adjustable one like this ?

Also. what else do i need to buy. and is there anything i need to watch out for once installing it ?

Cheers :)

You can use a standard one but there is no fine adjustment so the timing could be a little off. Next choice is to use a standard one with offset keys like these http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=38158
which will make the small adjustments but you need to work out which key to buy.

Finally you can go the whole hog and buy a fully adjustable one like you linked to.

Personally I use the offset keys, verniers are nice but its not something you would keep re-adjusting during the life of an engine and the keys do the job at a reasonable cost.

Heres a link to my website on timing it in.

Yes, those bits will do.. You don't actually need a new timing cover the old one will do but with either you may have to adjust it a bit (with a hammer) to clear the duplex gears, do a search on that..

If you have a standard cam then yes, aligning up the dots will do, thats what they did in the factory but I would check it anyway, and thats when you will work out how far off it is so you may as well get the offset key to make it exactly right. If you have non standard cam then you need to do this as the timing may be different and the dots will not work.

The tensioner is just adjusted up enough to take up the slack, dont make it too tight.

When I put my duplex on recently, the dots didnt perfectly line up with each other through the centreline of the crank and cam ends.

If i span either sprocket round by one tooth it would be miles out, so I just put it down to the dots not being punched on the sprockets dead on, that and my TDC isnt completely flush with the blockface for some reason, even though i'm pretty sure I had it decked, but its near enough so i hope its ok.

I found the vernier duplex really easy to use, my cam was about 110deg initially and needed to be 108deg, this was altered really easily and ive now got 107.2deg to allow for chain stretch aswell.

I reccomend the vernier for ease of use! Then again a fixed sprocket would be fine, you'll just have to wait for the right woodruff key in the post!

TBH Iwould always go for the vernier duplex Kit now I have all the kit for making my own off set kit but at the price of labour it works out cheeper to buy the Vernier and it lighter which is a bonus,

Paul.

dont forget you will need 2 countersunk allen screws, as the wider gear will catch on the std bolts heads

Do you have to countersink the holes under the crank sprocket on belt drives aswell?

I just used the short rear drum retaining screws when I countersunk my plate.

Time for some post excavation....

I'm going to be fitting a standard steel duplex setup soon. I have the two counter sunk allen screws. Do they go in the two holes below the crank?

And I'm guessing I'll need to create a matching counter sink in the standard backplate??

Yes, just make sure you make the countersink deep enough.

The fancy bolts are hex recess countersunk rather than the brake drum ones with phillips, but both will do the job.
