Im in the mood for a gadget, even though I dont need a speedo yet as the engines not finished haha.

Whats a decent pushbike speedo to get? Brand/spec/ease of fitment/where to buy etc?

I'll be mounting the gubbins inside the rear drum.

Looking to spend about £20-£30 maybe for a half decent one?

Cheers

Cheaper than I thought really! I'd rather have a more fancy one, with a few features and a backlight!

Those cateye ones looks pretty pimp.

Yeah theyre cool! Cant justify spending that much on a speedo! I only REALLY need to see the speed, time would be nice aswell haha.

Would speaker wire be the stuff to extend the normal wires from the sensor?

Also, do you have to caibrate with the wheel size or does it just measure the rotations and works out the figure for you?

just pop in the circumference or diameter or the whole wheel and tyre.

i should think it would be okay to extent the wires with speaker wire.

stoke-on-trent

I was going to get a stack st700, but thats very tempting. they also do the vector that shows the distance on the same screen.

Everything works well too...except the tacho... since you have to connect the rpm sensor via a spark-plug cable it is kind of unstable. I tried to connect it as normal (coil) and the reading was way off! I use a Autometer tacho for easy reading, so I dont care! *happy*

so im guessing it is designed to read the tacho of a single cylineder bike?

would there be any way of using some sort of resistor or something (sorry not very electrically minded when it comes to whats what) to divide the output down the wire to the dash by 4 so as that it thinks it is only running one cylinder worth of spark?

do you see what i am trying to say? i think ive made sense...but then again!

I used the search, found this thread, and resurrected it after more than 2 years!
Been looking at bike speedos for my current, non turbo, daily driver. People have mentioned Cateye being a good make, so I browsed through their website, looking at their different speedometers and deciding which features I do and don't like.

Wireless: no thanks
Backlight: preferable
Main feature: Speed, Odometer, Trip, Time.

Not fussed about much else.

Found the Velo 5 which looks like it'd suit my needs and it's on eBay pretty cheap!

So, thoughts? I wanna sort it out this weekend really! so would like to order it today.

Also looking at getting a small, cheap, electronic Tacho.

Edit: I bought it anyway, it was cheap and should do everything I'm asking of it.

Yeah, the one I bought has no backlight, oh well!

Bought some new gauges to redo my dash too, so will be getting an overhaul some time!

How well does yours work on the pot joint? Is it better relocated on the rear hub or is there no real difference?
I've seen people say about cornering and spinning up having an effect when it's on the pot joint.

yeah, the drive to one side can be different to the other, but really who gives a shit?

im not looking at the speedo whilst spinning up, nor during hard cornering, its just so i can keep under 30 if the plod are following me through town

Awesome. That's pretty much what I'm needing it for. I don't have a turbo so there isn't too much danger of me bombing it around town, but I'd like to keep points off my license so knowing when I'm doing thirty would be awesome!

Cheers Joey. Now I've just got to wait for it to arrive!
