Yes, they check your card on the way in.

Used to have a card, keep meaning to re-instate it.

I don't suppose it would hurt to ask them for a walk round before you decide to become a member.

You are allowed to take guests in as a member, so if anyone you know has a card ask to tag along with them next time they go. I think you are allowed 2 guests per member per visit.

Around here, if you walk in to a Costco without a membership card, they will still let you in to the place if you just tell them that you are thinking about becoming a member.
