SEE MY NEXT POST DOWN FOR MY NEXT PROBLEM, IGNITION IS NOW SORTED!

I have aquired a Leyland DAF 200 flat bed at work that no-one owns (checked with DVLA and Police), i have got into it using a snooker table key, and now im trying to start it.

No being a nice kid i have never hot wired a car before, however i know the basics. On the back of the ignition switch there are 4 wires:
1 earth
2 x (approx) 1mm wires
1 x (approx) 2mm wires

now when i touched one of the 1mm wires to the earth the dash lit up and the wipers came on. the other 1mm one their was a ticking noise that sounded like the starter trying to go, but the batt was too dead (been sat for 3 years lol)

When i touched the large cable to the earth nothing happened.....

The batt is on charge now, so when try it tomorrow ( i want to make sure the engine still turns over before i spend any cash on it) what do i have to do you get it to start?

not sure on on a daf tbh

with older cars you just run a wire from the live battery feed on the solenoid to the coil and use a screw driver across the solenoid to crank the engine

youll stil have to get around the steering lock though (which is why they put shear bolts on the column i imagine?)

What makes you think its an earth? can you see it attached to the body?

I would have thought the larger cable would be the feed, and the two smaller ones ignition live and starter trigger

Get a meter on it to be sure

turn the wheel? really hard! may need 2 people! fooks the barrel, sometimes the column and normally the wheel. costs loads to fix but then if you need the vehicle in a hurry who cares *wink*

alternativly drill out the shear bolts on the barrel. or if its like a mini then the shear bolts have never been sheared!

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

in the first of those 2 pics there is a screw on the side of the barrel at the end furthest from the key. if you remove that the electrical part comes away and you put a screwdriver in to start it (easier that touching wires, especially in the dark) to remove the lock you need to remove the barrel
