Does anyone know which blocks are older?-thick or thin flange blocks? Some people say the thick flange blocks are older, it was changed to thin flange to save some metal - some say they made thick flange blocks because of reliability problems with thin flange blocks?! Any comments?

Forgotten more than most ever know

Afaik all 1300 blocks are thick flange blocks as fitted to Austin 1300 bodies, Marinas, allegros etc.

All Mk1 and some Mk2 1275 S blocks were thin flange blocks.

Don´t know about small bore varieties. Anyway, all blocks roughly 1969/70 and newer are thick flange ones.

Thick flanges were introduced in order to stiffen the block, simple as that.
