It was Mini MOT day today. Had the wife's 35 and my Sprite booked in on the same day to ease the logistics. The MOTs both fall on the same day would you believe.

The wife's 35 went in first. Now this poor car is the most badly treated Mini in the family, it sits outside all year, gets used about twice a month but rarely lets us down. It's very rusty in places although its OK chassis wise.

Anyway, it failed on the brake discs. They were very bad I must admit. To my surprise, the youngest lad volunteered to fit new discs on the last day of his school holidays. As he has just rebuilt the front brakes and suspension on his Studio, I was happy to let him do it. To my surprise, the local motor factors had discs and pads in stock for £35. I could have bought a bit cheaper by mail order but needed them today.

So swapped the cars over at the MOT garage.

Now the Sprite is running the Siamesed Code on the Megasquirt and my home made inlet manifold and has instrumentation and wires everywhere, so I was concerned that the MOT guy would not be happy.

To my surprise, it passed. Given the EFi, the lack of cat and servo I was expecting otherwise. The MOT garage is owned by an old mate who is aware of what I'm trying to do. He drag races a couple of turbocharged jap motors so understands.

In the meantime, the youngest had changed both discs and pads on the 35 in about three hours which I thought was prety good.

So swapped them over again.

The wife has just gone to pick up her 35 with a fresh MOT.

Total cost £135, a bit of driving about and supervision.

Just felt the need to share my rare feeling of wellbeing and say thanks to my youngest lad.

Yes, but most MOT places would haved failed the Sprite. The fact that my old mate actually did the test meant that he was fully aware of the project and used common sense and good judgement.

I don't mind paying a bit extra for the MOTs because they do a lot of little jobs for me for free. Things like getting tyres off rims.

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

It's that time of year again.

A repeat of last year, both cars booked in on the same day.

I had spent all last weekend working on them to get them ready.

The Mini 35 seemed OK until I took it for a test drive only to find that one of the rear brake cylinders had seized. Fitted a brand new cylinder, bled it, tightened the bleed screw and it would not stop turning. Shite. Had to make a cylinder up out of the old body and the new pistons. Plus take it all apart again. Crap parts quality strikes again.

Started the 998 EFI Turbo on Sunday morning only to find a puddle of petrol underneath *angry* That took all day to sort out and check all the spension etc.

So I was somewhat lacking in confidence that they would get through their MOTs. I've been like an expectant father all morning.

They both passed *Clapping* *Clapping* *Clapping*

I took the opportunity to discuss getting the Miglia MOTd with my old mate. I explained that it was a 1972 mini that had been converted for racing and we were now trying to get it back on the road.

He said "No Problem, I MOTd a spaceframed Camaro last week" *happy*

Very good *smiley*

I agree that £50 is steep though. My local test station does them for £35 with no restest fee if I fix any issues.

The same man has done all my MOTs for t he past 10yrs. not to say he is a mini fan and a avid mountain bike and motor bike rider. So I dont mind paying £45 for mine to get tested.

Own the day

I pay the full £50 but I go to a place that is totally impartial - the local council depot - they have no interest in failing something to try to get the repair work which could make the bill a lot higher.

Plus they are a good bunch of people and know me. If they find something wrong they take me down the pit and show me and we agree together what I have to do about it.....

To me the £50 is piece of mind in case I missed anything.

Mine does the job properly and points out my errors. So I think of him as a bit of a safety net.

I've known him for 35 years, from when he had a tuning shop and I was a spotty youth.

He knows I'll do whatever I need to fix the Minis but I give him the Focus to service on a regular basis.
