Call me a twonk if its on here somewhere but I've had a little go with the search button but I can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for.

Just purchased a car with a rebuilt box complete with Jack Knight 4 Speed Straight Cut CR Synchro Gearset and JK SC 1:1 Drops.

If I were to combine this with a cross pin diff roughly how many billies and curly wurlies would this be able to handle without imploding?

Cheers

from what I gather it is true about the increased wear rate but not too sure how much it is increased by.

Shropshire.

That’s basically the set up i have but a different ratio in the drops. You should be able to run big power.

How much were you after?

I'll be running helical gears with about 120HP so I hope your gearbox will hold up *tongue*

i am, no signs of damage yet from inspection.

in reply to the comment made by ashley_dude00.

they dont wear out quicker, in fact they would last longer then helical cut gears as they eliminate cross loadings ect.

its because stright cut gears are used in performance situations genrelly.

they would sit pretty to 150,000+ miles in a 998 driven by an old lady.

technicly the matirial wears away quicker because of less area mateing but how often do you see a mini gear box do 1000000 miles?

i got about 30,000 miles out of mine before a tooth snapped off first gear (which was a std 1st with a clubman set) the rest of the gearset was pretty worn though, the laygear was pitted a fair bit too. would have been fine for a few thousand more miles running at 170lb/ft but i got rid to be safe while it was still sellable.

sc gear will always pit due to there desgn, however with decent oil used like millers ctv will help.

i bought a set of sc dops of miniwilliams some 7 years ago and they were worn and pitted then, and they are still going strong.

a sc gear set and sc drops with a 4 pin diff ( minispares one) should handle 200 bhp no probs.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

Excellent. That means this box should hold up to anything I am going to throw at it.

Providing I don't turn in to a turbo mental nutter!

well, NO

if you drive with mechanical simpathy then an all singing and dancing box with the right drop gears and diff will take as much power as you can throw at it.

BUT if you drive like a cock then expect it to blow at any time

I know that if you treat your toys with the respect they deserve that they will last much longer.

I was indicating that the box/diff & drops should be able to handle the type of torque/power I am looking for, I won't be driving it like a cock as I will have spent far too much money to be buggering the box every few hundred miles.

Yes Shed is right, you can smash a box up with just 120 bhp if your an arse.
