Well since running specs past people on here actually it seems all that stuff is well over the top for what I want.
But I had a centre main strap fitted and it made the centre main brg go tight, so I had to have the mains line bored, so I figured if it was being line bored I may as well have the steel caps as well. All three are steel as well, not just the 4 bolt centre.
And I wanted group a gasket as my cylinder head cost a fortune and I am scared of blowing a head gasket and it eroding the head away enough to scrap it....

Nice block. Thing is by mechining the centre cap for a steel strap acctually weakens the whole setup. 4 bolt mains, good idea, still over engineered for most applications.

Yes I am sure it is over the top, but I have always aimed to build it once and for it to be strong and reliable!
I think that when the original centre strap was machined it must have 'sprung' slightly this causing the tightness when it was dummy built, hence the now steel caps and line bored setup.

I am an engineer at a steelworks, and at work we always design and build stuff way over strength so that when an overhead crane 'brushes' something (brushing being a quaint south yorkshire term for 'obliterating') then that something has half a chance of survival.....when you have 280Tonnes of molten steel being moved about it is no good designing right down to the wire! I get the feeling this attitude is now kind of making its way into my cars as well, oh well over engineered is good for me, VW's and Audi's are over engineered and they are good cars and don't break!!

i believe that the newer VW,s are not what they used to be as well alex, then again toyotas used to be really well built (reliable) until they started to make them in england, france and turkey

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

dragging this off/topic, but bollocks to the pair of you! That 1.8T engine they have in various cars is stronger than a strong thing that went to strong academy and graduated with an honors degree in being bulletproof. and every VW car iv ever been in has had exceptional build quality.

your right, VW's arnt what they used to be, there a bit fatter, but much beter for it. IMHO ofcource *happy*

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)
