Two things are special on these bolts:

1) The twisted grooves that re-cut / clean the thread as it's being inserted.
2) The 'lead' on the screw that allows it to self-locate and the thread to start.

Having refitted my subframe again yesterday, I have wondered the same thing.

Never seen them anywhere else - it may have been a BMC thing to aid the workers on the production lines.
I guess it would have saved cleaning out the threads after painting, and speeded up the alignment of the 'frame on a moving production line.

No idea what it's called though !

Metric is for people who can't do fractions.
