done the search, but still can't find an answer, there seems to be a small hole on the carb near where one of the plenumn bolts go through, whats it for and should it be blanked off, when i put the plenumn on, the gasket did not have the gole in it for this so i punched a hole through, just wondering if itis contributing to the excessive air intake.

This hole is vital do not blank it off! If there is not a hole in the gasket already made one.

Butterfly is correct, but you can usefully replace it with a solid type to get rid of the obstruction caused at full throttle.

Rob, that thread you posted was great, easily explained the balancing of the carb. I'm a lot wiser for that, cheers. 133.5 bhp 123 lb torque 116mph @6640rpm 9.5psi

Don't thank me, thank TD for explaining the workings of a boosted SU in plain English. Isambard Kingdom Brunel said:

Just rebuilding my turbo '44 at then moment and have had a read through this thread: http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=1675 I bought the carb service kit from Avonbar which didnt come with a solid butterfly. So, can I use this butterfly with the poppet valve then? Will it obstruct the flow that much? I cant see where else you can buy the solid butterfly's from apart from that rebuild kit!! |

You can use the butterfly with the poppet valve, yes. Obviously removing it will help flow a little, every little helps.

You can cut out the valve and braze the hole over. I don't really get why there is a poppet valve in turbo SUs, it must allow a lot of air through when your on boost and you snap the throttle shut! On 7th Nov, 2008 Nic said:

Pain in the arse! Should have just got the full rebuild kit instead of the service one, typical tight bastard. |

The HIF44 is a 1.75" carb though.

Found this: http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=42387 http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=38162 I think the difference in the turbo and non-turbo kits is the gaskets not the disk. brilliant thanks buddy! "Throttle Disc" for fuck sake! I was looking for the obvious "butterfly", of course it wouldn't be that simple |

best thing to do is solder it up to make the neatest job without buying a new plate. |
