The link is an audio clip of a standard metro turbo unit idling.
http://media.putfile.com/mini-32

I've got timing set at 7degrees and think mixture is in the right ballpark (colortune *oh well* and checking plug condition). It *seems* to be running alright, revs up freely etc, although it's not been put under any load. Does it sound a bit too 'tappy' though?

I've set valve clearances as per haynes but it doesn't seem to have made much difference. Tried the screwdriver in the ear trick but can't really hear anything beyond what you can hear in the clip amplified.

Am I just being paranoid and crack on towards mot see how it goes or should I be thinking about pulling the engine and stripping it down for inspection?

How hot have you got it? When you get it properly hot it should quieten down.

Hmmm thats a good point the clip there was from cold.

The other day when I was tinkering in earnest I'd had it running a while so it was up to temp. It wasn't till next day I thought it sounded a bit noisy.

I'll warm it up tomorrow a see if it quietens down.

I've assumed its standard metro as thats what I was told when I got it. Thats the problem working on assumptions though could be anything for all I know.

ya some of the Morspeed cams and some of Swiftys cams can be quite tappity when there cold as the have a very Quick opening speed which gives the sort of sound that is coming from you motor. I had a problam with a 1380 once which sounded tapity and the cause was a bent push rod which caused a bit of valve lag and made quite a racket.
regards,
Paul.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Had a listen - as suggested, get it up to temperature and see if if quietens down. Things to check, re-adjust tappets, check the pushrods are not binding in the block or head, check to see if the rockers lock nuts are not clipping the pillars. If the rockers have heavily worn pads then getting the clearance right is impossible - try swapping to an alternative set to eliminate them as the source. This approach will also eliminate severly worn rocker holes - there are no bushes in A+ rockers. Can't think of anything else at the moment. Good luck. Philtune

Had a listen today, it does sound a little better once it's warmed up but still quite tappy. As suggested it's probably just a little tired and nothing serious, I'll go over the valvetrain and see if anything presents itself.

I've got my old n/a 1275 sat in the corner of the garage is the rocker assembly same as on the turbo?

yep same assy,

when you pull them off have a look at the rocker shaft, if its worn that could be the problem.
